I'm just wondering because I always thought you couldn't but I thought I heard Floyd Mayweather say that he strengthens his neck to train his chin. And T. Bradley I think said he does pushups with his chin (I think?, not sure) to strengthen it. So does anyone know if a boxer can truly train his chin?

Most strengthen their necks

I once heard stories an Old time fighter who chewed on Pine sticks and rub burlap on face all day to toughen the skin on his face and make his jaw stronger.

Ali said that going down is often a decision. You get hurt and you a) choose to give into the pain or b) fight it..
I think that you can be trained to decide to fight it to the extent that this was true.. but at some point, and it's different for everyone, you are taken out of the decision making process..lol.. That you can't train.

there was an article on sherdog a while back about this. basically your only option is to strengthen the sternocleidomastoid muscles... which aren't big enough to really save you when you take a good shot to the chin.

I was told to chew on cut up pieces of mouth guard...

As above stated, there was an article on here form a md.

You can't actually strengthen your chin. But strengthening neck muscles is your best bet, as it is harder for your head to rattle in the most basic sense with stronger neck muscles.

Your neck and trapezius muscles are probably the biggest muscles you can train in that region. Maybe shrugs and pull-downs. One popular solution for weak chin fighters has been to move up a weight class but then you're also facing harder punchers. Apparently Freddie Roach has been experimenting with Amir Khan's fragile chin. We'll see how that turns out if/when he faces top level competition

I was impressed with the way Mayweather caught himself and kept himself from going down vs. Shane. His brain shut down for a second, and then he willed it back on just in the nick of time...

That's what I think Ali was talking about when he said going down is a choice. Some people are just too fucking stubborn to allow that to happen

Jack Dempsey?

also, to answer the question, you could condition your chin by working out your neck but a chin is generally something you have or dont have, you can work it out but you will never really get a strong chin fro working out a neck. jsut like a skinny guy who lifts weights, he can get stronger but he will never truly be strong

i was saying a guy who is naturally skinny but wont be as strong as a guy who is naturally muscular.

and before you give me an example of a guy who is one in 6,000,000,000 that was skinny and did so so and got powerful, im jsut saying for the most part its not a rule.

lols
do you mean big? cause thats still wrong

If there is a way get in touch with James Thompson and Andrei Arlovski ASAP.

But in all seriousness, you can probably strengthen the neck a bit, maybe learn to roll with punches better so the full force misses you, but if you're hit flush with a big shot some people just go down and others stay up. Luck of the genetic draw.

IMPROVE YOUR DEFENSE! wow... surprised no one mentioned that....

a knockout happens when your head gets shook so hard the brain, which floats inside the scull in some fluid, hits an inside wall of the scull. so you obviously can help it by strengthening the neck reducing the shaking of the scull - but not all of it.
head positioning is also important, like if it's holded tight to a shoulder it also helps reduce the shaking and gives you some extra chances to avoid knockout

Personally, I'm not that surprised, seeing as the questionactually was "can a boxer train his chin" and not "how to prevent getting hit and knocked out."
