Cain Velasquez career retrospective, thoughts?

Cain was the ufcs' top hw with the most potential but his propensity to get injured sidetracked his whole career.

It was so unfortunate when his knee buckled in the francis fight, he might ve given him a very tough fight if it wasn't for that. Unfortunately the Cain from now would even have extra trouble beating Cyril Gane
Lol, his knee didn’t buckle, he got dropped and landed badly on his knee.

those goddamn injuries. i really do feel like he could have been GOAT at HW, could have eclipsed stipe and all the rest if he'd been able to stay healthy. had the complete package, esp by HW standards.

He had some crazy performances and at times looked like he could beat any fighter that ever existed.

But he beat like two fighters in his peak. It was a what if career. Forgotten.

Overrated as shit.

Very good fighter, but people putting him into the pantheon of heavyweight greats need to look at his resumé again.

agreed. I’ve followed the sport for a little while and he was anointed the greatest ever with less than 10 fights. And fans would just parrot that.

At some point Cain was a favorite over anyone in MMA.

But I agree that greatness requires more accomplishments.

I think a fighter like Werdum would have been a nightmare matchup at any stage of Cain's career.

He's better in the stand up than Cain. He can use knees and kicks without worrying about Cain taking him down.

And on the ground, he's miles ahead of Cain.

All of Cain's advantages that he enjoys vs most fighters, would disappear against Werdum.

At his peak, one of the most potent HW's to ever do it no doubt. Overall legacy derailed by injuries though. Just couldn't make the walk to the cage as much as he needed too.

Good stuff man. Props for putting it out there. I used to work in video production & editing in LA a few years back & respectfully recommend a better mic/cleaner audio & shortening it up a bit. But I enjoyed it & look forward to the next one.

beautiful champ thank you so much for watching big dawg, I know my mic is shit thats top of the list of priorities for the next one

JDS-Bigfoot-JDS-Bigfoot-JDS then a KO from Ngannou.

That is his career for me.

One of the best "what if" cases in the UFC.

He spent his prime fighting the same two guys repeatedly and it diminishes his GOAThood, IMHO. He needed more names on his resume and that's what holds him back.

I think the same thing applies to Kamaru Usman.

At his peak, was one of the most talented fighters of all time though I think he wasted his potential from injuries and rematches.

absolute garbage, just like khabib. fought a bunch of no ones. fought JDS 5 times, and then lost to Werdum. hardly the HW GOAT. That title rightfully belongs to Fedor, with Cro Cop #2.

Let me give the devil's advocate perspective on this guy. Cain's rise to the top was 50% spent beating up the ghost of Big Nog and a WWE wrestler. Cain's championship run was spent fighting two fighters, Bigfoot and JDS, which while somewhat impressive, let's not forget JDS knocked Cain out in one of their fights.

The moment he fought someone else they knocked him down and strangled him out. One win against Browne (who would never win again) was followed by getting Ngannou'd who mercifully wasn't given the chance by the ref to deliver the ol' Ngannou special (cheapshot).

As for my opinion, he was a super entertaining fighter. Good luck at his upcoming trial, I can't imagine was it would be like to have a child molested by the people you're paying to care for them, that feels like hell on earth. But you can't go around shooting people like that, especially innocent bystanders.

His two defenses: two guys he was already beat. Ok, cool. That's my summary, nothing else needs to be said. Stipe is the best UFC heavyweight of all time hands down.

And If Jones could fight 4 more and win them all, we maybe can see a new UFC HW GOAT. I don't believe this, but 2 fights is like 2 years max. Maybe, just maybe, we can dream about it.

He was pretty darn good aside from being fragile and frail. Heck of a career but I dont think he was as a great as people make it sound. Rogan and others act like he was Fedor, Mighty Mouse, GSP, and BJ penn all in one.

Poor s&c advice leading to some injuries that took away his prime and potential.

During the open workout for the Francis fight there is a moment where you can clearly see his knee buckle and cain in some discomfort during that open workout. So going into that fight he was already fucked up bad.
