Hey guys, I'm new here and I have a problem. I recently bought an Everlast Tai heavybag and Med. 5oz combat sports gloves. 30 min- hr after I started hitting the bag, I noticed the middle knuckle on both my index fingers were starting to bleed. It's directly on my middle knuckles about 3/4 inch from where the fingers on the gloves end. Do you think the gloves are too small, or do I need to work on my punching technique? I know, I know, I would attend a school if there was one within 200 miles.

Don't use MMA gloves for extensive bagwork. Boxing bag gloves or training gloves should be your main glove for heavy bag training.

If those gloves are all you got for now, then wrap more around the knuckle area that gets the most f'ed up.

I think that will happen if you have exposed skin. You should have used bag gloves because they will break down slower than MMA gloves.

Now that you have them, just wrap them. You know what that means right?

Use hand wraps

In all likely hood OP is using handwraps. If not....Do! (wear them). However, all of my fighters get their hands wrapped when gloves go on w/o exception. They still get bloody hands. The poster is probably talking about his second knuckle which if the fingers on the gloves are not long enough will scrape that knuckle prety damn well. Answer is: sport tape the sucker. Just make sure you can make a clenched fist and close the finger you tape before hitting the bag. To protect your hands try to stick to regular boxing bag gloves. Unless it is closer to fight. I would say about 6-8 weeks prior to fight is the few times my guys will hit a bag with 4-5 oz gloves. ANd even then I caution against hitting 100% due to injury so close to event. Now mit work and grappling always MMA style.

Good advice. I just realized what knuckles the TS was talking about... I scraped those too from time to time when I used MMA gloves on the bag (don't do that anymore). I like using boxing gloves for mitt work though, except when preparing for an MMA fight.

Use handwraps and 16 oz gloves. Problem solved! Nobody really hits the bag with mma gloves.

I bought some MMA gloves for bag work made by Harbinger some years ago - I didn't know they were for MMA, they were sold a bag gloves.

They still look absolutely pristine and provide excellent hand/wrist protection. Better than most "real" bag gloves I tried.

I bruise my knuckles everytime I train with MMA gloves.. I bought wraps, didn't really help, however with the bleeding it may..

hahahahahaha
I would seriously let that guy do that to me if I were allowed to give him like 3 good leg kicks afterword, and I weight about the same as that bag

but yeah; wrap your hands, get bag gloves, use proper punching technique

the only time I where my mma gloves is for grapiling and when Im hiting the thi pads I wear 12oz everlast bag gloves for all bag work 16oz for all sparing. and I have no problems but I also have calusus over all my knuckles so I guess if their cut just keep working them and sooner or later theyll callus over and be tougher than ever

Hitting a heavy bag with light mma gloves full force is not the smartest idea. It will only slow you're training down through injury. That said, it is nice to get the feel for mma gloves but I would stick to pad work only with them.

I use 10oz boxing gloves for heavy bag work and pad work with 3 meter Mexican wraps on underneath. I keep my 16oz boxing gloves for sparing because I find bag work and pad work with them can be sloppy.

People sure like those mma gloves, don't know why though, big gloves not only help you not get hurt, but the added weight is great for the shoulders. Aim with your knuckles, the ones youre supposed to hit with. That way you wont be hitting the other part.

Why are you using mma gloves. Use regular bag gloves. Make sure you're wrapping your hands right. There's lots of videos on youtube about wrapping hands. Make sure your gloves are large enough, if they're not you want be able to make a proper fist.
MOST IMPORTANTLY make sure your technique is correct. When throwing hooks make sure
your arm is 90 degrees. Dont wing punches-use your legs, hips, and shoulders to drive it.
