Basically a construction worker found the knife and gave it to an off duty cop and the cop decided to keep it as memorabilia. He wanted to have the knife framed and put on a wall and contacted his buddy from the LAPD and that's how he got caught.

A construction worker found a knife buried on the perimeter of the former O.J. Simpson estate ... and it's currently being tested by the LAPD in a top secret investigation ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ.

The story is incredible. We're told a construction worker found the knife years ago -- we have heard several different stories, ranging from "several years ago" to 1998, when the house was demolished.

The weapon is a folding buck knife.

Our law enforcement sources say the construction worker took the knife to the street, where he saw an LAPD cop. He told the officer where he found the knife and the cop took it.

Turns out the cop -- who worked in the traffic division -- was off duty at the time, working security for a movie shoot at a house across the street on Rockingham. Our sources say the officer took the knife home and kept it ... kept it for years.

In late January of this year, after the cop retired from the LAPD, he contacted a friend who worked in LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division (RHD). The cop told the friend about the knife and said he was getting it framed to put on his wall. He wanted his friend to get the DR (Departmental Record) number for the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ronald Goldman murder case, which he planned on engraving in the frame.

We're told the friend was indignant, and told his superiors. The brass was outraged and demanded that the retired cop turn the knife over, which he did.

Our sources say the knife is currently being tested for hair and fingerprints. It will be moved to the Serology Unit next week, where it will be tested for DNA and other biological evidence.

One source familiar with the investigation tells us, cops who eyeballed the knife think it could have blood residue on it, but it's hard to know without testing because it's extremely rusted and stained.

The investigation is top secret. It's been logged into the LAPD's computer system outside the official case file to maintain security. Our sources say, since O.J. was found not guilty, it's still an open case. That means cops can continue investigating, but O.J. cannot be prosecuted again -- double jeopardy.

Even if OJ hadn't been prosecuted, this knife wouldn't be admissible as evidence. It has many more chain of custody problems than the original evidence.

How does that thought process go "Oh I found a buried knife at a house where a famous murder took place, I'll take it home and get it framed!"

Can they prosecute this man for his stupidity?

It would however give closure to the families of the victims.

He can't be charged with murder anyway, Double Jeopardy. It's the fact that they can finally close the case for good and the families can know for a fact he's the pos that killed their loved ones.

Well he probably assumed that it didn't matter considering OJ was already found not guilty for the murders. So even if they found OJ's prints on it and Nicole & Ron's blood, they couldn't use it as evidence for anything.

It's really amazing to me that OJ got off from that murder. When you sit down and look at all the physical evidence in the case, and the fact that people literally saw him leaving the scene in his Bronco, it's flabbergasting that he got off because of one racist cop.

He had a cut on his left hand. There was a trail of blood on the left side of bloody footprints. The footprints were of a rare, and super expensive shoe, that he wore and in the exact same size. The bloody glove found was left handed, the same hand he cut. The other glove was found at OJ's house for fucks sake. There was literally a blood trail that goes from the crime scene, to the Bronco, and back up to OJ's house. But because one cop was racist, he is innocent?

At least he'll likely die in prison already.

Yeah, that won't hold up in any court of law. The chain of command has been 10000% ruined.

How do they even know it's authentic?

"So, uhh, this guy gave me this knife years ago. He said it was the OJ knife, and I just believed him and kept it. Now I'm telling you about it for no reason whatsoever, fellow policeman. I'm certainly not trying to stage a hoax, or anything."

Yeah, I'm calling bullshit on this story. They'll probably find out it was the cop's grandfather's old fishing knife, or something.

Do you even 'murrica, bro?

He got out of a murder charge by screaming racism. That day I saw black students running through the hallways of my college cheering about the verdict and telling the white students to "take that." That was the first time in my young adult life that realized this country was completely in the shitter.

Construction worker found the knife on the site and gave it to a cop (that was in uniform) working off duty security across the street.

It will be interesting to see if they get anything but the chain of custody is so screwed it will mean little.
