hi guys, do you do competitions in Brooklyn BJJ?

I don't train there, but I know it's not a competition-oriented school. However, I have seen guys from Brooklyn BJJ on the registrant list of local tourneys, just not many.

For what it's worth, I was recently rejected from joining BBJJ because I have a blue belt from another school. I think the defining factor in their decision was the fact that I expressed interested in returning to my first school over the summer, when I have a break from studying in Brooklyn.

They are not interested in those who are interested in competing, and they generally do not think those who have previously trained elsewhere are capable of making the transition to their system. (This is almost their exact words).

this school sounds like they are sitting on one hell of a high horse . . .

i was planning to go there during christmas time when my gym was closed but i've heard that they don't accept drop ins either.

That place is terrible.

checked it... here's the scoop

having someone from outside of their academy come in will probably make those students already in the school "question" their own school's methods after being exposed to a much different system of BJJ than theirs

belt exams happen in groups of like 80 at a time

belts are given up to about 20 stripes at a time till time of promotion, each stripe being given out after a certain number of set classes so you can go for your blue after having like 15 or so black stripes on your belt I think

instructor was showing technique, everyone was sitting down, one girl stood up and was asked to "sit down please"

they have a student creed that is read as a group before every class

don't know if they have open mat

had a TSK feel except with no competing

everyone used the same brand boxing gloves and wore identical rashguards with the school logo

definitely "different"

i trained at the 13th avenue branch and its great for beginners. the only thing i did not like about the place is that they do not let you roll hard. Also no competitions. you can join competitions on your own but the school wont back you up. They teach almost the same techniques everyday and its only based on your attendance how you get striped. I left after a couple of months because i was also training in muay thai and never wanted to go back to brooklyn bjj. i suggest you check out new york jujitsu in the city they have bjj, muay thai, mma they have it all. my friend trains there and loves it, but i never trained there so i cant give you much info on that. good luck
