Last spring Ortega had only a single win in the previous 5 years and was doing exactly what you stated (didn't want Ilia because he was only ranked #9).

Illia went on to win a headline fight on a national ABC card, fights for the title, and is now champion since then.

Ortega is getting to the point to where he just needs to fight instead of crying about rankings.
 
Awesome mstch to make If it gets made. Ortega finally defending his perpetually high rank against one of the most interesting prospects in the game
 
YESSSSSS this might mean we get Roundtree Jr vs Hill after all. Roundtree will be clear to fight early july so just make that fight again for a fight night headliner

He went to a really fun and dynamic decision with an undefeated guy in his debut, then notched 3 consecutive first round stoppages in a row.

Considering he's 29 years old with 30 pro fights, he should definitely be fighting name brand ranked fighters next. Ortega is a really great matchup.

No doubt. Just odd in terms of rankings. I'm more than surprised Ortega would take this fight but mad props to both guys
 
On what planet is this a reasonable replacement fight? Ortega got whooped by Max, and i dunno who the other guy even is, and neither does casuals. They might as well cancel this event.
 
I don't know if I like that match up. It just doesn't make sense right now.

I'm not too sure about where Lopes's striking is at. Ortega is deceptively good, he decimated my man The Zombie (though I still think Chan would've eaten him alive in his prime). I've seen Lopes blitz and destroy his last two opponents and he did have Evloev backing up a couple times, but we haven't seen much at all, we know he has power and is, uhhh, eager, but that's it for his UFC run.
Would be interesting to see how they fare on the ground, both are incredible grapplers.
