Sometimes the best decisions are the ones made without thought. That strategy has worked out for Brian Ortega, anyway.

Ortega (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) stepped up on short notice and knocked out former champion Frankie Edgar (23-6-1 MMA, 17-6-1 UFC) to seize the No. 1 contender’s position at featherweight. And for a brief second, he nearly got himself a shot at the lightweight title in the chaos before UFC 223.

Ortega was one of several fighters who volunteered to step in when interim champ Tony Ferguson (23-3 MMA, 13-1 UFC) injured his knee and withdrew from a headliner against Khabib Nurmagoedov(26-0 MMA, 10-0 UFC) at the pay-per-view event earlier this month.

“I took the fight no matter what, but when you make a decision, you don’t fully think through it,” Ortega, who next meets featherweight champ Max Holloway (19-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) at UFC 226, told MMAjunkie. “When I started finally thinking through it, I got excited.”

What was so intriguing to the 27-year-old contender? A natural complement of styles that, to him, presented a good challenge and a chance to make a bold statement against the undefeated Dagestan native.

“Not too many people present a good ground game from the bottom,” Ortega said. “They survive a little bit, and it’s kind of boring. But not too many people are attacking from the bottom, hurting with elbows. They don’t bring that kind of game because it takes a long time to develop. Whereas me, I grew up in that situation, where I was always the bottom guy, always getting beat up by these guys. So I had to adapt my game to that.”

In other words, Ortega thought he was the perfect foil to Nurmagomedov’s suffocating top game. The thought that no one had been able to beat the lightweight contender at his own game apparently didn’t cross his mind. Nurmagomedov was good on top, he was good on his back, and that was a good style matchup.

“I was curious as to what was going to happen,” Ortega said.

But alas, the opportunity was not meant to be. The UFC rolled the dice with featherweight champ Holloway and booked him in Ferguson’s slot for the lightweight title. When the gamble backfired and Holloway wasn’t cleared to make weight, lightweight Al Iaquinta (13-4-1 MMA, 8-3 UFC) was recruited on short notice and was dominated by Nurmagomedov over five rounds.

I really hope he don't that, maybe after 4 or 5 title defenses I would like it but not right after if he beats Max

I want to see that fight!!!! I think it should happen sooner than later though.

Would love to see that fight but both guys have work to do in their respective divisions.

Worry about Max first
That’s a very very tall order

He has always been a bottom guy. What honesty. You gotta admire that in today's world.

Ortega is one of the fighters that will likely beat Khabib. Is normal.

I favor Ortega in both fights too.

I just think Max is going to get taken down somehow.

As a Khabib fan I'm terrified with a fight with Ortega but I'm still confident Max should beat Ortega

I really don't want to hear no crap from anyone who just won the belt, or in this case has not even won one yet, talking about how they want to fight for a second belt. If you win a fucking belt, defend the fucking belt. Otherwise, your just a pussy pretending to be a fighter.

one of the more interesting matchups possible that could be made against khabib. I give T-city a legitimate chance

Interesting. Holloway will probably tko Ortega and I don't see Ortega doing anything from his back vs Khabib. Tavares was doing just fine in his guard. Ortega has fun grappling, but it is a bit overrated right now.

Khabib mounts him and pounds him out

Unfortunately for natty 45'ers, the new breed is comprised of large 55'ers that make massive weight cuts for a few fights at 45 and then going up once they attain their goal. Max is definitely going up soon, and the fact he was declared unfit to cut to 55 is proof in the pudding. Guys like Frankie and Cub just can't compete with the Ortega's, Holloways, Conor's and Zabit's.

I think Max beats him but he ortega is the favorite vs Khabib

I don't know about Ortega's cardio but i don't believe its as good as max's. I think its probably on par or better than Khabibs though. I think Ortega has a striking advantage over Khabib and a huge disadvantage vs Max. Khabib has controlled and pounded on guys on the ground. He gets guys on the ground mostly by chain wrestling and backing his opponent up against the cage. Doing that vs Ortega is dangerous. Instead of taking guys down and mauling them he's going to have to constantly be worried about his neck and defending subs. Thats completely different than pinning guys like Barboza, Johnson, and Al down and pounding away. Those guys aren't good off their back, never mind dangerous
