As an european I am shocked. I never saw that coming. I expect this drive to grow. Now I want trump to win so that Europe isn't guilty for the dumbest thing to happen in the world in 2016.

How likely do the Europeans think it is that The Netherlands will follow suit?

Very hard to say but my guess is that Sweden, Denmark and maybe Greece would be top of the list.

I'd be happy to go into a pact with our Scandinavian cousins. I think we've a lot in common.

Practically speaking, what's the purpose of leaving the UK to remain in the EU?

I've always wondered how that works myself.

I think it's just leaving the UK that matters to him. I think his girlfriend must have slept with a guy from London at university.

Salmond not only thinks Braveheart was a factual account of events. He seems to think it happened in the last hundred years. Dude's mental.

we gain control of all our resources from the UK, instead of just getting a budget every year(which gets slashed every year). We have massive oil reserves, plus an abundance of renewable sources of energy. Scotland is one of the most energy rich nations in Europe. we would benefit greatly being independent in the EU in comparison to how we would fare as part of the UK

I dont think you fully understand the situation, so please educate yourself before speaking

Weren't the economic outlooks based on the pre-collapse oil prices? From what I've read, Scottish independence from the UK would be a much more costly exercise than the Brexit.
Seems unusual ideologically as well. A nationalist movement that wants to join a trans-national union founded on neoliberal economic principles?

Scots should shut up. You had your chance to get out of the UK two years back, you decided not to, and now you're moaning that your nothing country's lacking will to stand on its own didn't force Britain into staying in the EU against her will?
Get outta here with that noise.
so you dont support democracy? Scotland overwhelmingly voted to remain..... there is no democratic mandate to pull them out. They are more than entitled to start campaigning for a new independence referendum

Guess that's what happens when you vote away your democracy in favour of tying yourself to someone else's ship.
Ironic, that.

Norway is wealthy because they have the same amount of oil as US........ sorry, but thats Scottish oil. we have a similar population size to Norway, we would be a wealthy nation if we had full control of our resources. but they wouldnt admit that during the indy ref

watch what happens when we do get independence and re-apply.... lets see who thrives and who sinks

I love it when people talk about shit they have no idea about. Oil and gas exploitation is left to the competences of the Member States, the EU had no say in your "massive oil reserves, plus an abundance of renewable sources of energy". All the UK ever had to do was notify the EU of licencing the exploatation rights. Also, how much oil do you plan to have once Scotland leaves the UK?

As long as the SNP no longer projects to sell your North Sea oil at $100/barrel to balance your budget and pay for your social programs, or Scotland might end up as the Venezuela of Europe:

In a way, Scotland is lucky that the independence vote failed. The optimistic financial numbers presented by Salmond, as well as the decision to continue using the British Pounds without a monetary union, was actually hilarious. I hope your second try will be more realistic.

Lol. What the fuck is the point in this response?
All I said was that Scots should shut up. Maybe I should have qualified it with "...until they have the balls to vote for their own independence."

Wasn't there a massive Scottish deficit this year though? Almost entirely attributable to the fall of oil prices? Considering the current oil market (not to mention the examples of other nations overly dependent on oil for their economic and political solvency), it's not exactly a pressing case for independence. Especially when the nationalist/independence ideology is blunted by appealing to the desire to stay in the EU.

It just doesn't make much sense to me. Even less than the Brexit.
Practically speaking.
