The black family started getting hit in the late 60's. Welfare helped make the black fathers unnecessary. Millions of black kids grew up with no father in the home. And 20 plus years later in the late 80's, the percentage of black MLB players starts dropping.

Why? Because baseball is a game passed down from father to son. That's why baseball has declined so much in the black community.

I haven't really come across a satisfactory explanation, it's likely a combination of factors.

One alleged issue is that the elite youth baseball players don't play Little League anymore, they play on expensive travel teams, which are obviously mostly inaccessible to poor people, and draw most of the attention from scouts.
