So, when I have an armbar from bottom. I have thrown my foot over the head and I am in perfect position to finish form the bottom. But the guy on top locks his arms. Like when you cross your arms basically. I do not know how to break this grip. I know how to break their grips from top if I have an armbar. But it is hard to do the same thing from the bottom. And if they have experience they can be very difficult to sweep from here. Which is why I want to have some tips on how to break grips from bottom.

From top I usually go for crossed legs rear naked choke grip where they lock their two hands. Or if they cross their arms I go for a biceps slicer to break the grip. But this is hard to do in an armbar from bottom. So I want some tips on what to do when they lock their arms like this.

Thanks

I've learned a bunch of complicated grip breaks over the years, but the two best ones are from Judo. One, you grab their leg and fall to the side, sitting them up. When they're halfway up, you kick them in the face with your hamstring. (It doesn't need to be that hard -- it's the shock that makes them lose the grip for me, but genuinely blasting them in the face will definitely work.)

The other is to get an Americana grip on the arm you want to attack and then lean back, so their hands aren't locked over their chest, but to the side of their body. (The logic is you're strong when you're bench-pressing, but that same weight would injure you badly if someone pulled the barbell a foot to the left. Once their arms are in that weakened position, fall towards their head and go for an Americana. You can't get it from that position, but you will break their grip and then you can just lay back for the armbar.

EDIT: I just realized OP is asking about breaking grips from bottom. Spin under him, roll him, and then you're on top.

Look up a baratoplata if they are RNC gripping their bicep.

Hmm this one seemed really intuitive from the bottom. Thanks :)

I have thought about doing the regular biceps-slicer from the bottom as well. Since I usually do that on top when they lock their arms in this type of mattaleon-grip.

But maybe the biceps-slicer would not work form the bottom since it is hard to create that pressure from the bottom. Have you tried that as well? The Baratoplata probably push their body away in a better way right?

What belt are you? I'd recommend you get good at attacking and finishing the armbar before looking at other finishing options. A solid armbar will always serve you well, but a biceps slicer is only going to be useful in a competitive context from brown belt and up. You don't want to get an armbar in a white/blue/purple belt competition and be unable to finish because you've focused on techniques you can't use rather than on finishing the armbar.

i rarely, if ever, try to finish it from the bottom when they do that. once their arms are locked, they can stack you, and it's a motherfucker to deal with that.

however, as soon as they go for it, you can spin out from underneath and either finish from there or flip them over and finish from the top.

this isn't the greatest video, but it covers the basics of it:

Walnut cracker grip, rotate towards head, extend.

Wrist lock to break the grip, extend.

Foot into bicep, push with leg to break grip, extend.

(Those are 3 high percentage grip breaks)

Tons of others - youtube is your friend.

That's what I do. I was going to post the video of Nick Diaz doing this same thing to Cyborg, but an instructional is better.

OP -- it's generally ill advised to try to break the grip if you're on the bottom. Invert and flip them over.

Watch the master at work show how it's done:

If they have an RNC grip and you're on top, one option is to simply remove your leg from their face to disentangle. Again, the master at work:

While I actually think Rousey makes some errors in both clips, it's easy to be a critic.

As everyone said above, you want to flip them over to that spiderweb EBI overtime position and then you have a plethora of grip break options.
