I was looking at an old VHS tape I found where I had Hopkins vs. Trinidad recorded. Larry Merchant praises Hopkins and asks him of his game plan and thats when Hopkins responds, "thats exactly what I wanted to do. You should be int he corner with somebody because you're good at analyzing things" (not exact quote but somewhere along those lines)

Now, I doubt Larry would be a good trainer and Hopkins was just so happy and would have priased anyone who praised him after that terrific performance. But, it got me to think of Boxing trainers who perhaps didnt have any Boxing experience.

Enzo Calzaghe for example. Im pretty sure he never boxed. Atleast not officially (From my understanding). But he turned out to be a good trainer for his son.

What other Boxing trainers with little, minimal or even no actual Boxing experience them selves have turned out to be good or even decent trainers?

I don't think Cus D'amato or Angelo Dundee were ever boxers. You already said Calzaghe, he was a Jazz musician.

Im pretty sure Bouie Fisher was hopkins trainer for that fight has he ever fought?

Teddy Atlas fought one amateur fight. He had back pains during the fight, and found out that he had some spinal problem that made it unwise for him to continue as a fighter.

I don't know, but I think Pavlik needs to drop that guy. All I ever hear him say is "double the fucking jab"

yup jack sadly should allow pavlik a new trainer so he can evolve a bit.

Pavlik has a many years left he is still young what 26 years old he needs to change now.

The funny part is the cutman was taking over for most of the fights lol

thats how bad a trainer jack is well inexperienced watch the fights of kelly and in the corner that Cutman Miguel Diaz was giving the instructions at one point he made jack go outside the ropes as he wiped the face and told kelly what to do.

Jack was holding the spit bucket.

I guess some human beings just have a very good eye for analyzing things even if they dont have those attributes and gifts them selves.

Teddy's story is interesting. Maybe alot of these trainers are guys with form of a disability.

Something Jack has done obviously has worked though. I mean Pavlik did become World Champion. Im not exactly sure what else Pavlik could learn. His style is a bad match up for most Middleweights and no matter who trains Pavlik... Pavlik will always lose to someone who's special or All time great material

Well Jack taught him the basics.

There is plenty pavlik can learn.

Look at Marco Barrera how he evolved,Lennox Lewis used to trade and mix it up when he was younger and then become a more calculated counter puncher with a good jab, recently look at Manny Pacquiao he evolved exponentially.

Pavlik could use his feet more get on his toes, throw upper cuts bob and weave, use head movement, fients, throw more then just 1 2 3 punch straight punch combos.

he should also learn not to rely on just pushing a guy to the ropes. He can learn so much more.

Tito Trinidad is an example of a guy who stayed loyal to his trainer and paid for it.

Tito is pretty one dimensional but he has more dimensions then pavlik shows how one dimensional pavlik really is.

Did anyone else catch during the Hopkins fight when Loew told Pavlik to hit Pavlik it the nuts?

Enzo was smart enough to tell his son he needed a ko before the start of the 12th round......so he pretty much saw the same fight i was watching.

Enzo actually did learn how to Box, just didn't compete seriously. Yoel Judah was a kickboxer, but he was known for his hand skill as much as his leg work. Almost every trainer has either Boxed Pro, or Amateur. Manny Steward was an Amateur, and I do think Atlas had more than one Fight before the whole scoliosis issue surfaced. I think he only fought in one major tournament. I think Calvin Brock's Father is one of few who never actually fought in a ring at all, and perhaps Jack Mosley. Alton Merkerson boxed in the Military I believe.

I know a guy in my area who only had one amateur fight and was KTFO. Now he is working at a MMA school as a boxing coach cashing in on these poor guys, makes me sick.

you guys forgeting Nacho Beristain

Nacho can train but he can't manage worth shit. I'm glad JMM and Raffy both recovered from him derailing their careers a few years back.
