I found it very interesting after a manual review of conor vs. nate predictions. I was watching a video at Mayweather boxing gym and noticed more boxers knew/felt Nate was going to win and predicted as much. I found it more interesting that professional MMA fighters were not so good in this department. Most had Conor winning. The perspective is a bit shameful for the MMA fighters. I will admit its just one fight but still found it very very interesting.

That's because the MMA fighters thought Conor would use leg kicks ... but Conor didn't set up any leg kicks... and nobody thought he'd be tired after round 1 like a unprepared Mendes.

I never thought Conor would use leg kicks or at least not to the point where it would be a factor. Conor is not a big leg kicker (compared to aldo vs. uriah). You need a huge leg kicker to work on Diaz. Diaz did great in round 1. he put absolutely nothing on his punches but if someone is touching u in the face & chest you equate that with pressure. So Conor wasn't in bad shape but he was pressured with 'baby touches' in round 1. This was Diaz building his 'radar' on where and how Conor would react. Round 2 was the same but bad intentions were behind Diaz's punches. BTW ~ That's a boxing thing of 'pattern detection' Boxers are posers in my opinion because they refuse to except MMA but they do have a long history of many many rounds where u pick up on your opponents habits etc...

I always wondered that about modern mma. I understand the distance is different, there's always the threat of of kicks and takedowns and what not, but that's no excuse for not knowing how to throw a proper punch. Not all guys, but there's many MMA fighters who's boxing is frankly embarrassing. I have a hard time defending them when I'm watching MMA around my brothers who are hard core boxers.

Conor lost because he fought like the bigger man. Not only did this put him in danger of being pot-shotted, but he ended up wasting all of his energy. He should have looked to use kicks to stay out at range, and then quickly duck in and out when Nate was off-balance or turned around due to the kicks. He thought he was going to just wade in on Nate and blast him out of there...which was a terrible gameplan due to Nate's chin and skill level as a boxer/counterpuncher.

Boxing played a part in the loss...but most of it is on poor gameplan and execution by Conor.

boxers know never to fight a guy 3-4 inches taller with significant reach advantage

it's a recipe for disaster

Really? I thought most of those guys at Mayweather's gym picked Conor to win.

I had the feeling you were wrong, so I just went back and rewatched the video. Yep, you were wrong. Here's how it breaks down:

Out of 7 people listed as boxers or boxing trainers only, 4 picked McGregor and 3 picked Diaz, one of those seemingly only picked Nate because they are friends. So no, less picked Diaz to win.

Meanwhile, out of the only two MMA fighters there, neither picked McGregor; Lee went with Diaz and Pa'aluhi had no prediction. The trainers who do boxing AND MMA both picked McGregor.

Your theory that boxers saw something MMA guys didn't is not supported by the Mayweather gym predictions. The most hyperbolic pro-McGregor stuff was actually parroted by the clueless boxers. Two boxers there said McGregor is the best, the Mayweather of MMA.

Badou Jack (boxer) - draw
Raquel Pa'aluhi (MMA) - no pick

Kevin Lee (MMA) - Diaz
Eddie Muhammad (boxing trainer) - Diaz
Quatavious Cash (boxer) - Diaz
Thomas Herrera (boxer) - Diaz

Some guy next to Kevin Lee (boxer?) - McGregor
Chris (boxing/MMA trainer) - McGregor
Lanell Bellows (boxer) - McGregor
Dewey Cooper (boxing/MMA trainer) - McGregor
Ronald Gavril (boxer) - McGregor
Andrew Tabiti (boxer) - McGregor
Latondria Jones (boxer) - McGregor

thanks for doing this work! i hoped to avoid that by using the word 'manual' i really just meant i didnt count but it was my impression and afterthought once finishing the video. i did a random seach for mma predictions and it 'felt' like 80 to 90% conor. i watched a video of pro picks and ALL of them went for Conor. So your analysis shows 3 out of 8 boxer/trainer went for Diaz and 5 out of 8 (5/8) went for Conor. I dont think you will see this same fraction if u look at the pros....it would be more like 1 or 2 out of 10 although the pro picks video has 100% conor. Of course this is not scientific but just an impression. I dont think MMA had a better handle on predictions even using your counts. my source for the MMA video

NO.

Nate out boxed Conor, end of story. More leg kicks = more jabs by Nate. The jab is what broke Conor down. Nate was chipping away with it from the get go. Conor being rocked and the choke came from Nates jab wearing him down.

Nate rolled with more of Conors punches than people will admit. Did he get hit flush? yes!. Nate took his best shots and broke him down with fundamentals.
