Boxers Listed Height/Reach/Weight

My friend talked to him (Tyson) in Vegas at a restaurant and told me at 5'10" he was a little taller than Tyson, whom he said was probably 5'9". He did say that he was as thick as a house though. I've seen a few pro athlete's and fighters from BJ Penn to Patrick Ewing and for the most part heights are exaggerated. BJ is about the same height as me 5'8" or so. Patrick Ewing I don't doubt was 7'0", he was tall as hell and not very friendly. I saw Charles Barkley at a UB40 concert here years ago and no way he's 6'6", I'd say 6'3 or so would be accurate. I was in a elevator at the MGM Grand with Shane Mosley and he actually looked bigger than I thought he'd be, but we were about the same height.

There are many variables involved in MMA. You don't have to just stand and strike. There is also ground game, submission game, and from many disciplines. For boxing, it does matter because it's one discipline. If 6'5 guy is using his reach and murdering you with a jab, you can't bull your way through and try to body slam them (even though I have seen this happen in a boxing match). Your are going to have to use your ring savvy to get in there to do your work. Of course there are few men that have superb ring intelligence or great athletic ability that allows to dominate their opponents despite their physical flaws. However, those type of fighters are very few. So it is usually based on the physical dimensions. If you are tall, lanky, you most likely be a boxer. If you are short, stocky, you are most likely an inside fighter. And like I said before, if this person has great athletic ability or superb ring intelligence, the style would change. However, this is the usual paradigm for those specific builts.

I'd say that height can be used as a tool in mma as well. have you seen any recent kendall grove fights. He's 6'6", 185 pounds and uses his long limbs effectively on the ground and while defending against takedowns.
