I was speaking to someone who saw Sugar Ray Leonard spar in person (for Hagler, against a Lh no less whom he floored with a body shot, guess the rumours were true) and he said the guy was way smaller than either one of us, well, I'm 5-10, Leonard was supposed to be 5-10 and a half. You hear similar stories about a good many fighters, but when you look at them standing next to each other, the listed heights and reaches look pretty accurate, whaddya think?

I don't think that Andre the Giant was 7'4"

and I don't think that Charles Barkley was 6'6"

i've met some famous mma fighters (andre arlvoski and stephan bonner) they looked alot bigger than i actually thought. im about 6'1 175 so they are alot bigger than me, but they seemed bigger to me than they looked on tv especially bonner. Joe riggs he looked shorter to me but thicker than he looks on tv, but he was probably weighing about 215 when i saw him. I've heard mike tyson is not 5'11 1/2 more like 5'10.

Mike Tyson is actually 5'8. I stood next to him getting an autograph and I am 5'9 - 5'10. I am taller than him.

many of my buddies are pro mma'rs, they almost always look bigger on tv to me. the camera supposedely adds 10 pounds but i'd say it's more like twenty. My buddies look huge on tv, the lights and everything make em look much bigger,.

ive heard that a few times . theres no way he was 5'10" .

But it still doesn't change the fact that he can kick a lot of arse. He can military press my arse and throw me out the window. He is so bulky it's crazy. Guy is 5'8 walking around 245.

HBO officially measured him at 5'11' 1/2, and even captured it on film. I believe it was without shoes too. He appears shorter because he's thick and squatty, but no way is the guy 5'8". I don't believe that for a second.

sush, i have film of tyson standing next to a measurer, looks real, it reads app. 5-11.5 but it's not hard to doctor that. 5-8 is pretty hard to believe but it's not the first time i've heard that. How would a 5-8 guy no matter how talented be able to compensate for guys 6-3 and over.

Barkley is 6 foot 3 and he has admitted that he just thought 6'6 sounded better when he came into the nba.

Now explain to me why HBO would want to doctor that, when it's pretty trivial? HBO showed it to answer any questions about his true height, saying people always questioned his height. So they answer it by doctoring his height by putting up fake measurements? Ummm, doesn't wash for me. I think Tyson is close to what they said, although I met people who claim he's shorter as well. But they didn't have measuring tape either.

no, I didn't see the same film you're talking about then. If HBO did it then it's not doctored but if Tyson's management had anything to do with the vid I saw then yes, possible.

It was a short clip that they showed before a Tyson fight; however, I don't remember which fight it was. And yea, it was clearly done by the HBO crew.....

I assure you he is 5'8. Maybe 5'9... You make it sound like they never exaggerate someone's attributes. Victor Burgos is listed as 5'2, but he is really 4'11. Back when Foreman fought George Chuvalo, they said he was 6'5.

*To confirm this, you can watch some of the interviews Roy Jones had with Tyson on HBO. Roy Jones is truly 5'11 and he stood next to him and he was taller than Tyson. I stood next to Tyson and I was at least an inch taller than him.

Even the announcers (Steve Albert) of Showtime said Tyson's true height is around 5'9 when they put the stats up on the screen. It was during either the Danny Williams or Kevin McBride fight.

People give too much credit to numbers, especially in boxing.

In MMA, it's not so important to people if a guys record is 14-2-0 or 15-1-0 or if a guy is 227lbs or 221lbs.

Don't be stupid. Of course it matters. Especially in boxing. A good height and reach differential can mean a lot and it tells a lot about how the fighter fights. If he is tall and lanky, he most likely box the conventional way with his jab as the primary weapon. If he is short and built, he is most likely the type of boxer that work on the inside.

Fedor Emelianenko is listed as 6ft even if some guys say that he is only 5ft9. It makes a difference, yet people don't fuzz about it.

Also, some guys say that David Tua couldn't ever become the champ cause he is too short. OK, Mike Tyson is about equal height...

P.S. you can't write away the fact that in boxing, people fuzz about guys' records far more than in kickboxing or MMA.
