Board game discussion thread

Not going to lie, I'm Slightly envious. But I'm not going to go down that collecting rabbit hole again, especially since there isn't anyone to play the game against in this area anymore.

Funny thing is that since posting in this thread about Clix, my two buddies that were the last two hold outs to keep playing with me, have both texted me about the game.

One texted me about the Galactus that you can buy off of the Wizkids site, and the other texted me to say that he and his kid started playing now, and that he'd pulled the CAAV-058 SR Immortal Hulk figure in the 1st pack he bought. Lucky bastard always had crazy luck with his pulls. I'd buy bricks and cases to make sure I got what I wanted, he'd buy a few packs, and get SR and Chase figures (that he'd then trade/sell for the C/U/R set).

Making me nostalgic for the good old days lol.
Called plastic crack for a reason lol.

At my local store, I've been branded as "THAT GUY!" We'd be setting up for a game (pre-pandemic the Captain America and The Avengers set) and everyone would be looking at the ultra-chase on their phones... While they were doing that, I'd head over to the rack and buy a pack or two...

The FIRST PACK I rip open

I pull this...

Yeah... They hate me.. :)

Got way too much, like usual.

Got G Doom, Sue Storm x2, and Valeria Von Doom out of 5 bricks.

Getting Super Skrull was my main want, and thankfully I did.

I pulled R prime Franklin, SR Ms. Marvel (stretchy girl), SR Ghost Rider and SR Super Skrull. I can't wait until this pandemic is over.

We were doing a family games night last night. I work out of town, 2 weeks on 1 week off, so we try to do a family night every time I'm home.

We were/are bored of the card/board games we've got at home. I'd heard a lot of good things about Settlers of Catan (now simply called Catan). So on our way back from the beach yesterday, we stopped at a local game store to see if they had a copy in stock. They did. I could have bought it off of Amazon for about 50% cheaper, but then it wouldn't have been here for last night. And besides that, fuck Beezos lol. He's rich enough, and I'd rather support a local small business. Bit the bullet and bought it.

Have to say, it's awesome. So much fun. Super easy to learn, easy to play, and just a ton of fun. Takes a bit to get the game really going, but once you do, it's a great time. Whole family enjoyed it.

Highly recommend it for anyone thinking about a new board game to purchase.

Diplomacy is a great game but it isn't for the faint of heart.

As I mentioned earlier there are modern games similar to Axis & Allies that are much better.

One game that isn't quite the same but is getting a lot of traction is Scythe. I've heard nothing but good things.

Just got it (Scythe) and played it for the first time tonight. You can tell how addictive it can be already after 3 games.

So after playing for awhile (Scythe) it is a great game. My only complaints is it requires you to be a jack of all trades master of none if that makes sense (in most cases) which doesn't allow for a more focused strategy. Also some player/board combinations are essentially impossible to beat (some are outlawed in tournament play) Overall it is great though and I've been playing quite a bit.

It also has a single player version

Great new board games are being created all the time, many of which are wayyyyy better designed than the old classics like Monopoly. Human ingenuity in creating games will never stop, and it's fun seeing the results of it.
Current favorite: Betrayal At House On The Hill.
Also: Mysterium is excellent.
And I like online demo slots (I'm into gambling).

Board games are awesome. How about Uncle Wiggily?

There's a cool store (or probably used to be) in Grand Rapids Mi that has a monthly membership fee and you "rent" board games. They had a bunch of different ones the time I went there. Cool concept I thought..

Also, anyone played Battle Masters from the 90's? It was a big playmate with a honeycomb grid and some "terrain". It was light vs dark basically in a large battle where each side had 20 or more "units" to battle with. Each unit had a base that the little figures were on and each base had a place for a flag and sticker showing their "battalion", so there was some detail and customization. Each side had some fast units and some grunts and an ultimate unit, etc. The units had power and maybe defense stats that affected the dice rolls. Lots of dice rolling and card drawing. Awesome tactical strategy game!

Also, I've been trying to find a game I played in grade school, probably 1993 but the game was likely from the 80s. It had a sci fi theme where each player (up to 5 maybe 6) had a hexagonal piece (space ship) and I remember you drew a card which had a character on it and I think that character has a lower rating and you sort of manned your space ship piece with the character/general. Then you accumulated little units on your ship... Can't for the life of me find the name of the game... Was fun tho...

I dropped around eight grand on games RIGHT before the pandemic.

Here are some pictures I took as I was acquiring them.

Yes, my game room is lime green. I didn't think it was going to be quite THAT bright. The rest of my place is darker and mellow, I wanted this room to have energy.

How's gloomhaven? I've heard good things and might scoop it up at some point...

Started playing 1775 Rebellion. It's a great two player game. Lots of combat. Highly recommended.

Playing Dead of Winter now. It's not difficult but there are a lot of little things to remember. Its a blast when everyone knows what's going on though.

Think my wife would like dead of winter? I'm trying to find something we'd both find interesting. Monopoly can be boring. I'm looking for something lesser known.

She probably would. It has a lot of story and interesting characters that change the dynamic of the game quite a bit. When you play with only two people it's co-op so you work together to win the scenario. If you have three or more one person can potentially be a "traitor" and they can be secretly working against the rest of you.

Sounds fun. Seems almost like the walking dead. I'm going to start compiling a list. We can only play super Mario brothers for the Wii so many times

reviving this instead of starting a new one.

love Klask, Azul, King of Tokyo & Ticket to Ride have gotten multiple people hooked on ticket & klask

Wife's family super into Rummikub...got the six player version which is fun but they kick my ass if the game goes long and the moves get complex

Liked Cataan but the trading aspect slows it down for me, and my family doesn't love it like others seem to

Tried Hive but did not get into it first couple of attempts, and it is only a two player game, but may have to break it out again.

Really really want to hear from people that have played Crokinole to know if it worth putting $175 or so into getting a decent board?

Like suggestions for other mid level complexity games, 4 to 6 players, skill needed but some luck deciding the winner good too.

Smallworld looks fun but not sure of the complexity level.

Need something easy to pick up and score not something that you spend 3 weeks reading the instruction novel, 3 weeks unpacking the thousand tiny pieces, and 4 weeks trying to teach to your now bored and frustrated family

also curious what new games people are trying out?
