Blue Belt wins Absolute as a White Belt at UAEJJF World pro

Doesn't take a lot of brain power to see through the coach's BS, but what I'd really like to know is how he was able to take gold in absolute, but not his division.

His coach claims he was not promoted to blue officially (by a BB), instead his blue was given to him by a purple. That's being used as a justification. If we're talking technicalities (and provided that this information is accurate) He technically should have been competing as a WB. Yes, im definitely playing the devils advocate here.

While this is definitely not the right thing to do, i dont see it as being much different than a college wrestler or a BB in Judo competing at WB.

In the grand scheme of things, this doesn't mean much. There's no shortage of people with four years of high school wrestling and possibly some college competing at white belt level in competitions, especially in nogi. But still, seems messed up for the other competitors, especially at an event like this one.
As for the coach's excuse, I'm throwing the BS flag. If that kid couldn't afford a belt and was just using the blue since it was a hand me down, where did he get the money for his white belt for this competition? His supposed hand-me down gis seem pretty nice as well. Finally, how did they afford to get to UAE? I know Kazakhstan isn't necessarily far, but I doubt they drove. And hotels definitely aren't cheap there. Too much wrong with the coach's story for me to believe him.

if you aintt cheatin', you ain't tryin'.

But these guys took it to a whole new level.

Maybe I'll do white belt ultra heavy in nogi absolute. To prove the effectivness of Kenny kenjitsu.

Trying to care about white belt absolute .....

Failed. Failed. Moving on now.

A purple belt promoting a student to blue belt.
OK.

I can understand why most people feel this way, especially anyone that's made it past blue belt. White belt is a division of nobodies, the majority of them quitting the sport long before they'll ever have the chance to be a somebody. Even as a white belt myself I could care less who wins or how.
But imagine if you were a competitor in this event about found out you lost to someone that was pretty much cheating. Even if you're competing at the lowest level, you put in a whole lot of work preparing for this tournament only to have your chance for a medal taken by someone that easily outclasses you - I'd be livid. Sure, I could have just as likely lost to another actual white belt, but at least it's an honest loss.

Wow. Sandbagging to win a white belt division. That's pretty damn sad. If you're going to sell out your integrity, at least do it for something worthwhile.

Pretty soon we will need to add divisions even lower than regular white belt (zero stripe white?) so that even more athletes can sandbag to achieve their dream of becoming world champion.

We've seen this before in the Sam Osman case. They need to start recognizing people's legit promotion. Their not doing so is sending people down ranks. Otherwise, what are saying? This guy should be banned for being promoted at the wrong school? Why does he deserve a ban?

So time to register the blue belt to BJJ federation that run this event, they could not get the purple belt sign on his ID application? So he entered as white belt instead. I guess the purple belt should have not promoted him to blue belt if the promotion would not be recognises by any BJJ federations.
Or he should have got the OK of a bb to promote so at least the black belt to sign for the ID application.
Weird.

I see a double standard.

He was a white belt. It does not matter if he ever put on a blue belt or pretended to be a blue belt. You are a blue belt if you are granted a blue belt by the right Authority. As I understand it, he was not an official Blue Belt.

As I read the articles, he was promoted to blue belt after the competition. I have read many posts here that to make rank, you should compete to speed up that process. Well, it seem to work here. He competed and now he is an official blue belt.

Sounds like a Cinderella story to me. Perseverance and hard work pays off for white belt.

As for sandbagging, I don't know if that happened here for certain. Maybe he's just a victim of circumstance living in a poor country... and living in the town that does not have the ability to officially promote students.

They could just stop fucking with people's promotions. Just let them advance when it's time.
