bjj - what is the first submission you learned, and your favorite "go to" submission

Think the first sub I learned in BJJ was a simple cross collar choke, go to is probably far side arm bar or kimura from side. If I can’t finish it I usually take the back from there. In the gi my go to is probably bow and arrow

What happened to Nefti?

He posted a ‘got my blackbelt’ thread, that when you clicked on it was a porn bomb. I happened to catch it pretty quick & deleted it, & tried to sweep it under the rug, thought maybe he was just drunk or something. But then he did it again the next day, same thing. Another mod saw that one, & clipped him.

If you were an asshole, which you are not, this would be a pretty good excuse for you.

Guillotine was the first.

Triangle is the go to

Can't help but wonder what the deal there was; ill-advised account bet? manic-depressive episode? cracked under stressful life/social situation? bogdanovs threatened to expose 'It' unless he ducked his head down?
Well, maybe that's just my charitable curiosity anyways.

He posted what looked like a pic of his IRL black belt with the words "It's been fun" or something to that effect along with the porn bomb. Even after he got the ban hammer and the porn image removed, the thread and the pic of his black belt stayed up for most of that day which was pretty cool.

Americana, I can hit it from almost anywhere and I am almost immune to it (flexible shoulders and a good defense).

My favorite is the Renzo Gracie "plastic bag" (a modified ezekiel choke.)

Rear naked choke, learned it while training Bando in the early 80s. The first submission learned in a BJJ class was probably the arm bar from mount, which I learned in the late 90s. It seemed like it was the only submission we used to work on, we'd do reps of it almost every class like a warm-up drill.

My go to submission is the Darce, which I go for all the time and never hit. It's like I have submission turretts, I don't have long arms and never set it up right, but I can't stop going for it.

Train with Maung Gyi by any chance? I trained with him back then, late 90s. Ugh.

First submission I learned was an Americana.

I love being in side control attacking the far arm with a straight arm bar/keylock/kimura depending on how they defend. The transition between the three is super slick

Also love the Mir lock lol

Cant recall first sub i leaned....my go to in Gi is papercutter. If i can stabilize north/south im 99% likely to sub with it.

Cool, did you live in Ohio? Yeah, I trained with him in the early to mid 80s. My instructor had a black belt from him, and so we'd train with him once in a while. Then I moved to Atlanta and the Bando club there was questionable, so I switched to Muay Thai.

Don't know first sub.

Go to is either armbar or kiruma from top and cross collar from bottom. I use to like a baseball choke from side but haven't landed that in quite awhile.

No, Houston area. He used to come do seminars. He was cool, but honestly a little sadistic, and then I found out about all the stolen valor shit later. I was only 15 at the time so I wan't going to say shit lol. Basically the dude is a pathological liar. All the talk about the gurkhas, the Olympics, all complete bullshit. He said he had 3 Silver Stars and 3 Bronze Stars. Lies. He said he had master's degrees in philosophy and law. Lies. He said all sorts of shit. This is what I heard with my own ears.

Dig around a bit, it gets worse. That's only what I heard, he's said all sorts of bullshit to other people. The dude is a complete fucking fraud. He ALSO claimed to have a PhD in psycholinguistics and taught for 5 years at Harvard, which is fucking hilarious because that's MY field, and he's definitely lying about that.

It's all fucking disgusting. My cousin served in the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. He's a real soldier. My dad was friends with a guy that was in Merrill's Marauders (who actually served side by side with the Gurkhas). That's a soldier. I've got a buddy that was a SEAL. These guys don't sit around and talk shit about what they did.

The part that is really strange is, he obviously knows what he's doing as a martial artist. He could have just gotten by on his own merit. But he had to go and tell tall tales about himself, and it's a fucking disgrace.

My own original martial arts teacher still hasn't disaffiliated himself from this fraud, and it makes my respect for him drop too.

That's something I still really like about BJJ. The Gracies were lecherous fucking dirtbag rich kids who made no bones about it. It's a fighting system meant to do damage, not this mystical garbage. Alright, rant over.

Google Maung Gyi. You'll be shocked (assuming you didn't already know).

The Americana from mount was the first sub I learnt and got people with.

Triangle was the first sub I had some confidence with as a white belt. I loved hitting triangles, and I had pretty good hip flexibility back then. These days, not so much.

Yeah, I read some of this 5 or 6 years ago. I found out my old instructor died, so I was searching the internet about him and Bando. It was depressing reading this, so I didn't look into it too much. It's a real shame, because it appears he's a legit martial artist. I know that my instructor was legit. He was a second degree Karate black belt, and he made the move to go train with Gyi and get his black belt under him.

I trained really hard for three years, paid my dues with blood and sweat, and most of what I learned held up really well when I moved to Muay Thai. I guess it's a lot better than if I had learned some useless martial art, but it still seems unfortunate.

I remember talk about how Gyi was a former soldier and had fought with the kukri, but that wasn't something I heard much about. Mostly we were just training kickboxing. I suppose he was telling those stories to "Black Belt" magazine.

I remember one time he came and we did some forms with the kukri, and he reamed my instructor out because a bunch of us had rusty kukri's that we weren't taking care of. He told him that it was dishonorable. Ironic!

Was it good porn at least?
