I haven't trained in over 2 years and now feeling the health effects of being overweight. I just turned 30-something and my metabolism isn't what it used to be. Thanks to job stress, failed relationships, and general depression, I've let myself go. I'm determined to get back into shape and interested in taking up fight training again. I used to fight back in the day around 145lbs. I'm now 165lbs. I looked at local gyms and I can choose either boxing or BJJ training. Which would be better for losing weight and getting back into shape? Which would be better on my body for starting back up?

It depends on the gym, but I'd lean more towards boxing.

I've been to a boxing gym that had me jump rope for 20 minutes to warm up before spending an hour hitting the bags, and another boxing gym that had me do 5 tabata rounds with various exercises before the bagwork/sparring.

I've been to a BJJ gym that warms up by jogging around the mats and doing a few light stretches to warm up, and I've been to a BJJ gym that does half an hour of kettlebell exercises, burpees, and other fun stuff.

It depends on the gym.

If I were you I'd chose BJJ. Not only will you get some cardio but you'll also get to work muscle endurance and strength when rolling. The warmups and drills for BJJ aren't necessarily taxing but rolling can be, especially if you push yourself. That said boxing is excellent for cardio. When ever I train a lot of standup weight falls of me quickly. However for total health I'd still go with BJJ because of the strength work, and if you haven't trained in a while the cardio you'll get in BJJ will do wonders for you.

id say theyre close. my bjj gym warmups are pretty intense and we have conditioning days.

id say with which ever one you enjoy doing more.

who says you cant do both? I do both and I burn fat like mad. AM BJJ, PM MT/Kickboxing and on off days I lift heavy. I only take 2 days off a week so I train like a maniac. If I had to pick one over the other, I'd say BJJ will burn more fat if you roll at 100%. If you flow roll, you wont get as much out of it. Basically, any situation that puts you in harms way will work. Nothing makes you sweat more that trying to not get hit or tapped. BJJ requires much more muscle endurance and boxing develops more twitch action. If you were you, I'd do both. If I had to pick one or the other, BJJ all the way.

Both are excellent but different. I'd probably say BJJ personally but boxing cardio work is excellent. Also, on non martial arts days try to get a mix of Hiit and LSD traning if you can, it will help with both conditioning and fat loss.

I am a huge BJJ fan and been training for 4 years .... but i would say Boxing for sure.... becuase if you are doing right you you shouldnt be getting that tired... in jujitsu you arent saposed to be using strenght like in wrestling it is saposed to be easy and controlled and the longer you train the better your body can perform moves with out wasting energy... IMO

As far as the actual sport, i think boxing is more taxing.

Depending on how you train will determine which one burns more fat.

Boxing, Probably the most intense conditioning sport on the planet, Secound would be Wrestling

Boxing.

FWIW, at my club those that train MT recreationally are on average much leaner than those that train BJJ recreationally.

That's not to say that the BJJ guys aren't fit, they are in a different way...but if losing body fat and having a fit appearance is your priority, then Boxing/MT would be your best bet.

I actually gained muscles I thought I never had from bjj. Started bjj at 160 lbs now i'm around 167-170.

MUAY THAI Probably the most intense conditioning sport on the planet, Secound would be Wrestling

FIXED!!!!:D

for weight loss i would go with boxing!!! if the warm up conditioning is good!!

with BJJ you can take it easy!! boxing is non stop

totally agree!! as someone that has gone from BJJ> muay thai!! wow its way more intense

The point of BJJ is to be able to win without getting tired. It was made to use as little energy as possible so little guys can take out big guys (Gracie vs. Kimo) when u train BJJ you learn to do the same moves with less effort you rbody gets used to being as ergonomical as possible with each move to waste as little energy as possible.

BJJ is amazing i love it but even when you are Live Rolling, you learn to use less energy, unlike wrestling which used alot more strength.

SO i would say go with boxing MT or wrestling if weight loss what u want, but if you wanna b an ever bigger bad ass on top of those train BJJ cuase its is the bestestest lol

the trick is to do them both together. Fuse your workouts to create a complete mma workout. Personally i can do a jits roll for 20 mins without gassing, and its about the same for kickboxing, but when i combine my pad work and my wrestling i gas in like 5. And that is themuscle endurance you need to work for a fight.

You might lose more weight in a Gi-Class, due to how fucking hot it gets in those things... It is all definitely dependent on your gym, and how hard you work.
