I know the belt levels but how does promotion work? Can a black belt only promote someone or can anyone promote someone to a level lower or equal to your own? Do first degree black belts promote others to first degree black belt or does it have to be a second degree black belt promoting someone to first degree? Thanks

Generally non-black belts can't promote anyone, ever. Even black belts generally cannot. It's usually higher-ranked black belts who have been delegated the privilege from the system's founders.

You'd be surprised how political and kung fu movie-esque the whole thing gets.

In BJJ only a black belt can promote you. And only higher degree black belts can promote them respectfully.

If you're planning on practicing the sport seriously rather than just a workout to stay in shape, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE LINEAGE OF YOUR THEACHERS BELT.

I.e. If it's watered down more than a gen or two from a legit practitioner then don't trust it.

If it's anything other than a black belt promoting then laugh in their face.

If it's Somone like a legit purple or brown belt is TEACHING but not doing belt Promotions then you're fine. Better them rather than a black belt from a McDojo.

why did you post this thread in the ufc forum? grappling forum exists you know

god damn do I want to start training BJJ

life is just passing me by

worried that I'd make a total ass of myself with my lack of cardio.

there's a gracie school nearby, and every time I drive by it, I have a pang of self-disappointment.

Do it!

BJJ is for everyone! All sorts of ages/weights/fitness in my team

Everyone is nervous walking through the door. Everyone gases out. Everyone feels like their getting run over........but after a few weeks someone new will walk through the door and you'll realise how much you've improved!

Is a 2nd, 3rd, 4th degree black belt "better" at BJJ or are the degrees more or less what they have contributed to BJJ and viewed as more of a timeline or lifetime achievement type recognition?

First few classes you'll get tired as he'll, because you will waste too much energy. Don't get discouraged, it's part of the process and happens to everyone. Progress is fast. Try to roll with people with higher belts whenever you get a chance. The good ones will teach you a lot while they kick your ass.

More of a timeline thing imo. The best fighters will always be those who compete often, although they are not necessarily the best instructors.

not sure wtf you guys are talking about. my sensei gave me 2 black belts when i gave him $100.

Bjj will get you in shape , don't make the mistake of thinking you have to train to get to a point that you are happy with your body or cardio or whatever before joining... It will never happen, and let's face it, if you could have gotten to a level of good cardio by yourself, you would have done it already. Good schools are prepared to accept students with shit cardio

Exact same for me. And I'm smoker too ... I've been meaning to sign up for the past 3 YEARS lol
