Everything I see online about an MMA gym owner says he was a Pam Am BJJ Champion/Gold Medalist, except the IBJJF site says he took 2nd. Can anyone with knowledge of the BJJ world give a possible explanation?

I asked this on another forum and was referred to ask this forum:

Everything I see online about Danny Ives says he was a 2001 Pam Am BJJ Champion/Gold Medalist, except the IBJJF site says he took 2nd. Can anyone with knowledge of the BJJ world explain this?

Either the web site is wrong, he's wrong, or they closed out.

What do you mean "or they closed out"?

Closing out is when two guys from the same association or school are in the finals and they don't compete to see who wins first. They just decide that one of them will get first and the other second.

If he conceded the gold then he shouldn't go around calling himself a gold medalist.

I have no knowledge of this situation, but I recall seeing closeouts at worlds at the lower belts and both guys referring to themselves as world champs in their bios and whatnot.

OP, if it's important enough to you to post on multiple message boards, why don't you just contact Mr Ives and ask him directly?

When people close out, it is pretty common for both guys to say they got gold. It does get confusing though.

Just to be clear, I have no idea if he actually closed out. I just floated it as a possibility.
