So im moving to Hollywood, Fl in about a month or 2 and im looking for a place to train. I know ATT Ft. Lauderdale is near but i dont know if i want to go to a super packed academy. Im mostly looking to train BJJ but if other classes are taught that would be cool as well. Also my little 12 year old brother will be training as well, so they would have to offer kids classes. Any help or info would be appreciated.

ATT all the way man ... there's plenty of them around

You'll get plenty of instruction no matter which school you go to.

Check em out and decide for yourself.

There's also Gracie Miami in North Miami Beach ... FFA down near FIU ... etc ....

Ummm, Marcelo Garcia just started teaching out of his school in Hollywood, Florida. I'd probably go there... being thast it's in the same town, and he's the best and all.

I called and talked to his wife. They're charging 3 bills for me and my brother

Well worth it. I'd be at Marcelo's if I was down there.

you're in Clearwater? My friend just moved down there, and I'll be there hanging out for a couple weeks for my birthday. What gyms are near there?

My gym is in Clearwater. Address and map at the site: www.tampabjj.com.

David Viera (GB black belt) has a gym in St. Petersburg, which is near CW.

Over in Tampa you've got Rob Kahn and a couple other places. Never really go over there so I don't know that well.

A couple affilates run by purple, brown and black belts scattered around.

But really you should just come train with me.

Well I still have a broken arm, but like I said my friend now lives there, and she told me she wants to start training again. Good to know I can take her by a good school right in town while I'm there.

I believe they do have Saturdays going.

$300 a month for two people? That isn't bad just about every other school of quality charges $150 a person down here. I might be wrong since it was second hand info but I also heard Marcelo doesn't have contracts so you can go month to month.

When my knee is done with rehab I plan on going to Marcelo's, also one of his purples does some teaching on Tues and Thurs. at his house.

If you do decide to go ATT I'd go to the main school in Coconut Creek, there are about three affiliate schools and the closest to Hollywood is Cooper City and I would not recommend it. Coconut Creek will be about a half hour from Hollywood.

The closest Gracie Barra school I know of is the one in North Miami Beach which is about a 20 minute drive from Hollywood. Someone mentioned Popovitch which is about 20 minutes north in Ft. Lauderdale.

There is a "Carlson Gracie school" in Hallandale, it is very small I know nothing about it and the only reason I know of it is for some reason BJJ signs catch my attention when I'm driving.

Almost forgot, there is a Renzo Gracie affiliate in Weston that is about 20 minutes or so west of Hollywood and I know they charge $150 a month per person.

I'll be working in Ft. Lauderdale. is ATT really worth it and are the jitsui classes quality?

oh and its actually 315 a month for me and my 12 year old brother @ marcelos

The BJJ program at the main school ATT I would say is worth it. I have never attended there but have rolled with people that do and they represent themselves well. One knock I've heard is that it is very crowded.

$312 a month, what is the break down? How much would it be if it was just you? One interesting note, Marcelo's school used to be a ATT for Hollywood (the Cooper City school replaced it).

Personally I'd pay an extra $12 to learn from Marcelo, I didn't get to attend the seminar he had down here but I know Aesopian did and he reviewed it on his website and had very good things to say.

Personally I have been looking and it came down to the Renzo affiliate and Marcelo for me. i really don't like to drive a long distance since I drive so much at work already. Also a caveat the drive times I gave you were non-rush hour, no accident delays.

One thing I'd do if I were you is go an try the different schools, forget what everyone else has to say, every school will let you train for free at least once, many will give you a week. Ultimately it will be your dime and time you and your brother are spending so take some time and check the places out yourself.

I think there is also a Cotoure affiliate in Pembroke Pines (west of Hollywood), don't know much about it I think it primarily is a mma and no-gi. Never checked it out only saw a couple of ads for it, seemed kind of trendy crowd to me, but I may be wrong.

i wouldnt be interested in a Coutore school at all. i think that ATT Ft. Loddy is gonna be the one. Marcelos place doesnt offer stand up yet and training stand up is a big thing for my little bro.

If that's the case, than I think you've made the right decision. I can't think of a good BJJ school down here that does offer stand up other than ATT.

I asked a couple of friends who have kids that go to ATT and they had a lot of good things to say about their kids programs too.

Robson Moura, yes THE Robson Moura has opened a school in Tampa Bay (I think that's where he said). And yes, he teaches there personally, head instructor. He lives in Florida now.
