BJJ in Connecticut

which should not be necessarily considered a bad thing, all of fabio's students demonstate a really slick tight guard game... but if you're looking for that super high pressure dominating top game that made carlson's students famous... you won't find it...

I know what you mean about the Carlson-style being associated with the tight top game but Carlson put out sooooooo many good guard players that being a guard player doesn

Great info on the local schools.

Also, RGA in Stamford is not an affiliate it is owned by Renzo.

Professors: Daniel Gracie, Neiman Gracie and Gino Einaudi

Who is this ZeCarlson, and where do his mystical powers come from?

Lemme break it down for ya
State of Bjj in CT:

Tier 1 Schools:
--------------
(If you can afford to travel to a tier 1 location, its highly recomended, these schools will provide world class instruction and allow to the progress in the sport most efficiently.)

1) CTMMA - Fairfield:
-----------------
Run by Roger Denton, the first bjj instructor in CT (started w/ rickson in '95 i believe?), brought in probably the best black belts in the world w/ GF Team, regularly has Denilson Pimenta, Vitor Henriques, Vanessa Oliveira, Italo Lin, and Rodolph Viera teaching classes in there... really nothing more to be said about that, Mundial Winning Quality Talent in there and really fantastic fadda lineage "sapateiro" style game to be learned.

2) American Top Team/ Best Way Bjj - Danbury:
--------------------------------------------
Run by Luigi Mondelli, multiple time world champ under Dedeco (the champion maker) and all around SUPER nice guy, has an extremely well run team and produced some of the areas BEST mma talents including Ryan Quinn(who's since been moved over to ATT Coconut Creek) and Hitalo Machado )who i believe is running Formiga's MMA program now?).

3) Gracie Sports - Norwalk
Run by RED belt Marcio "Maccarro" Stambowsky! One of Rolles Gracies original black belts! Plays an indescriptable style of bjj that absolutely needs to be seen! Train with this guy atleast once, truly a living legend!

4) JiuJitsu and Strength Academy - Cromwell:
-----------------------------------------
Run by Matt Bryers, but bjj is run by Rafael "Formiga" Barbosa, multiple time world champion (and high level bjj phenom... have personally seen him literally DISMANTLE some of the state's other top black belts... he's really that good...) . Formiga also has his own school in Danbury I believe, since he has recently broken away from Luigi @ ATT.

5) C3 Athletics - Stamford:
Run by Cesar Perreira, a true Carlson Gracie Blackbelt and top notch instructor, his students are just starting to make an impact on the local bjj tournament scene in a big way...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tier 2:
(still provide high level, legit, bjj training)

6) The Lion's Den - Middletown:
Run by Danillo Cherman, a very high level nova uniao bb who came up w/ shaolin and is beginning to produce some high quality talent as well.

7) Carlson Gracie CT: New Haven:
Run by Fabio Araujo, formerly a partner of roger denton's (i believe roger brought him to ct to run his bjj program?), is a student of Possidente, a top student of Perdneias(?) teaching a really slick super tight nova uniao style guard game, has created some of the states finest 1st gen black belt tourney monster's like Dom "The Crippler" Nusdeau & Chris Watson.

8) Gladiator Team CT - ???:
Run by legendary underground mma fighter Mario "Machete" DiNatale, Currently a top student of Gabriel "Gladiator" Santos , teaches authentic Carlson Gracie super aggressive top game style.

9) Underdog BJJ - Hartford?/Cromwell?:
Run by Fabio Teles, a straight badass Gracie Barra style game outta rio, this dude is cranking out some of the state's baddest bjj mma fighters right now, i.e Parker Porter...

10) Brian Olsen's Academy? - West Hartford?:
Run by former Wec Champion Brian Olsen, supposedly legendary Carlson Gracie / BTT Fighter Gabriel "Gladiator" Santos runs bjj classes.

11) Renzo Gracie Bjj - West Haven:
Run by Mark Cerrone, recently begun putiting out some solid tournament competitors.

12) Team Link - Enfield:
Solid Instruction, Producing Solid Tournament Competitors
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Tier 2a: Good Skill Level - *USE CAUTION*
13) DeLima Bjj - Danbury:
Run by Marco DeLima, has a checkered history with a certain member of the local bjj community, however appears to be creating some high level prospects regardless.
(see: The REAL meaning of the word "CREONTE". It's written about him by another local bb )

14) Ultimate MMA - North Haven:
Run by Andrew Calandrelli, was expelled by renzo gracie from his academy for pulling a Kevin Casey, Ari Bolden'd shaolin, and has made quite a few women in the local bjj scene more than uncomfortable enough to never return to his academy is barely scratching the surface of that bullshido story... regardless he seems producing above average bjj competitors and mma fighters.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tier 3
(Definetely still legit enough bjj is starting to become more prevalent in the area and trickle down, but only stick around at this level if you absolutely cannot afford to go anywhere else, its still advantageuous to atleast be learning and training some bjj rather than none at all, but there is some seriously HIGH level bjj in this state now, so take advantage of it!)
------
the royce gracies ; the self defense centers of "this n that"; karate mcdojos teaching mma/bjj now...

Renzo West Haven is growing fast a deserves some recognition for sure. I will give you that it is a younger school, but it growing fast and has a top notch instruction. 12 guys went up to the Springfield Mass NAGA and pulled 14 medals home this past weekend.

The fact that it is Team Renzo and you have regular access to all of Team Renzo guys in the city including John Danaher(who was just in for a seminar), Daniel, Igor, Gregor, etc..alone makes the academy amazing.

UltimateMMA in North haven with Andrew Calandrelli. Renzo BJJ Black Belt that came up through the ranks with Shawn Williams, Nick and Matt Serra - now affiliated with Shaolin. Great facility with a good atmosphere.

+2 on that.

no-gi is run by andrew and the gi is split between andrew and emanuel dejesus. dejesus took silver at the 2010 pans at brown belt light feather. both very knowledgeable when i came.

not very close to westbrook, but worth the drive if you want to try it

very close to yale for anybody in the new haven area

Let me add to this r@tarded list.

Stamford BJJ. There are 3 schools, Renzo, Submit BJJ and C3. The school with most solid background is submit bjj and Renzo.. How could c3 be top teir when its new? Answer me that? And run by a dude whos record is 12-18?

Renzo is run by Daniel Gracie and Neiman Gracie, A GRACIE (s), not second teir nabs like you described. The students are good, which is where it counts, students that exhibit the tech that is taught.

Submit is good. No comment there, because i trained there once.. ONCE and will not pass judgement, thats not already on the net.

C3 has good bjj instruction, thats 'not carlson' yet hes Carlson... WTF does that mean? OMG DOES CARLSON STYLE DIFFER THAN WHAT THE WEB DESCRIBES? yep, dont judge. BJJ is about body types, you would know that ifyou were good.... Cant be good top game if you weight 155 lbs vs someone whos 200 lbs.. OWW WAIT THATS FABIO ARAUJO!

Now, if you say that Fab's school is 2nd teir, yet produced great bjj fighters like the ones you wrote, why would you place him in 2nd teir and not top? PLZZZ TELL ME THAT? HAVE YOU TRAINED THERE? OR RENZO'S? OR OTHERS? Rather than just spewing stupid words that came from a 3rd party and not go there to train? Oww, you also forgot other great bjj fighters from Fabs like John Clarke, Ryan Griffin, Sherdog, Mac, and other great black belts from Fabs. To say he is 2nd teir, yet produced these great bjj fighters? WTF are you smoking and whos c@ck you suckin?

Dont talk smack about other schools unless you trained there, give you exp rather than 3rd party handed down words.

ULTIMATE MMA is an up and coming mma school. They produce good fighters. What ever goes on in there, in terms of politics lies upon their students, not you. You already defamed allot of schools just by your list.

Renzo west haven is legit. Great students, great fighters, renzo style.

And teh fact you lumped ALL OF ROYCE GRACIE SCHOOLS is ret@rded. How about the ex-pat? Like Jay Bell and Brad? How about hte Norwich school? Have you trained in all these places to judge?

Have you trained at Marcio's gym rather than say 'just train with marcio, because hes a legend.' There has to be more substance than that, how about his students? His assistant instructors? How about Mao Mao or his son Neiman?

Overall this 'zecarlson' is on some hefty sh@t and i want to smoke it. He gets info and relays it as if it came from a reliable source. Do your reserach, train with teh instructor and judge for yourself. The way you wrote your 'review' is as if you train at all these places and seems like god... You are not J****y C, whos a legit bjj fighter in CT that is welcome everywhere besides your school.

AND WHO THE FUCK IS 'Mario "Machete" DiNatale', first thing on google (with MMA to his name) comes up:

SNE MMA Competition Team

0-0.. HOW THE FUCK CAN THIS RTARD BE A PRO FIGHTER AT 0-0? AND TO LUMP IT AS ANDREW'S SCHOOL AND FABIANO TELLIS AND ARAUJO? WTF U SMOKING? LEGENDARY UNDERGROUND FIGHTER? WTF... Let me get 20,000 posts on the underground and say im a pro fighter. Heck i been in bjj/mma since 2001, choose to stay out of it because THERE IS NO MONEY IN THE LONG RUN, so now can i vouch to be a 'legendary fighter?'

And to lump the Cromwell school in 1st teir, doesnt make any sense... The school just opened, yet has the best review in the world? All because of a traveling instructor that also teaches in Danbury AND CROMWELL? He's great and all, but to say its world class just from the opening is like saying all virgins f@ck like porn stars.

Wheres Lion's den? How would you rank them? Let me guess, since hes associated with its founder, Kenny, then he would be with Royce Gracie?

You had the right mind to delete your retarded posts, it already created allot of stir.

And to associate Fab's style as non Carlson.. Is even more retarded... Fab recieved his black belt in early 00's from Amaury. Yet didnt wear it until Carlson came to do his LAST EVER SEMINAR in New Haven. Imagine that, 6 years without wearing your black belt, because he wanted the 'MAN' to slap it on him! Come on son, if that does not say deditation to carlson, then what does? Go lick your own ass and see if you find gold.

Note: I use to train at Fabs, marcio's renzo's and many others, moved for work in the city. Wont say where i train, word gets around fast, esp in North East.

Totally, to label every style/tech is absurd. Not all body types are created equal, esp in bjj. We learn what works for us and throw out the rest. I always say, no one can ever do the closed guard Marcio sweep, unless your 6'5. Heck his son does a variation of it, yet very effective. Do the tech and modify it, to gain good position then win the fight (sport or real), thats bjj.

I doubt anyone is going to do a 50/50 nova scocia dela rive oswaldo gracie butterfly sweep in a real fight, esp if they get pounded in the face. The art of bjj is a martial one. Sport is sport, you can be a black belt and still lose a fight. A punch can make you into a retard. Look at Andre G...

With that said... I think im going to name a style of mines, since i am well trained, from many instructors and different systems.... Hmm... Dang, my Portuguese isnt good, so i guess ill call it "Punheta" style! Because i'm still single :P.

Note:

Punheta: Male masturbation; hand job. Other verbal expressions equivalent to jerk off and jack off are bater punheta; tocar uma; bater uma. Espancar o macaco; descabelar o palha

His nephew Kroyler does it pretty good, but he's a pretty big guy lol. I've hit it like twice my whole life, but that's against 150lb white belts lol. I do have a "cazador" style though, and Hip Bump has a "touro de press

Yea, taller the better. I do the Neimans way. He did it to me twice and i learned after getting slammed on my head the 2nd time. Take what works. I find practiced it, but sux to do it, everyone hates being slammed on their face hehe.

Sure, since im a good at my '"punheta" style, i wouldnt mind going down and teaching it.. Need a few days rest, because after, i just want to roll over and sleep for days on end ahehehe.

EDIT: Just to clairify, doing Neiman's way is going for Marcio's sweep, then if he/she defends, grab both legs sweep. VERY easy to transition between the two. Because well... I got swept by him many times and i can vouch for it. I've learned my lession to not stand up in his guard hehe.

EDIT 2: Yea Kroyler is strong and tall.. He has the drive, the young drive to become good/ best. And he has good hips for someone his build. But theres one thing i learned vs big dudes with good hips... Stay away and dont give them your arm or anything! They will roll over and try some fancy move, and will bring your arm/limb for a ride! Not cool if you want to do the "Punheta" style later on LOL.. Ok nuff of that joke, its gettin.. yea uncivilized.

I heard that "Todo Dias" and King of Lockdown have been training in Norwalk for a minute now.

I forgot to mention Chris Watson and Ryan Griffith have their own schools now, but I think Chris focuses on BJJ in the gi only.
