Hello

Do you know anything about BJJ schools near Westbrook?

I will be thankfull for any informations.

I found this:

East Windsor Connecticut Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - ( East Windsor , CT )
Specializing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi and no Gi classes are available. All skill levels welcome.

Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Network of Norwich - ( Norwich , CT )

Connecticut Mixed Martial Arts/ Renzo Gracie - ( Derby , CT )

Combative Martial Arts Systems - ( Gardena , CT )

Team Venom - ( New Britain , CT )

Modern Self-Defense Center - ( Middletown , CT )

Which academy is nearest to Westbrook?

westbrook is a pretty cool area man... i grew up in northern CT. i spent the first 1.5 years of my BJJ training under Jim Hughes which is a currently brown belt under Royce. Royce would come by, do seminars, and award belts (which i always found so cheesy). Anyway, that main school is in west hartford, which is rather far from westbrook. (so is east windsor)

however, a guy named Brad Wolfson (purple belt under Royce), has a school in new haven, which is very close to west brook, and i would recommend this school hands down. i trained with him constantly through my first year and a half of BJJ, and the guy is great. takes a great approach to BJJ... very relaxed and fluid, and is a great teacher.

shoot him off an email or give him a ring. hope this helped.

Hmm, pretty cool. I will be at Yale next year and am looking for a place to train.

The Modern Self-Defense Center is run by a brown belt under Roy Harris. He's a very good instructor and really personable and friendly. I've gone there for seminars a few times. The people who train there are good at BJJ and are cool in general.

If anything in New Haven is an option I would say you have to check out Renzo Gracie New Haven (now located in West Haven). Our main instructor is Mark Cerrone, a Renzo blackbelt that was one of his original students when Renzo came to NYC. Daniel Gracie was just at our academy yesterday actually.

Renzo Gracie CT - BJJ Jiu-Jistu, Muay Thai, MMA, Self-Defense

Anyone have rates/reviews for BJJ in Stamford? Post here, pm me- I dont care- Im moving

UltimateMMA in North haven with Andrew Calandrelli. Renzo BJJ Black Belt that came up through the ranks with Shawn Williams, Nick and Matt Serra - now affiliated with Shaolin. Great facility with a good atmosphere.

I'm pretty sure he was expelled from Renzo's before he got his blackbelt, but I could be wrong on that one.

Lemme break it down for ya
State of Bjj in CT:

Tier 1 Schools:
--------------
(If you can afford to travel to a tier 1 location, its highly recomended, these schools will provide world class instruction and allow to the progress in the sport most efficiently.)

CTMMA - Fairfield:
-----------------
Run by Roger Denton, the first bjj instructor in CT (started w/ rickson in '95 i believe?), brought in probably the best black belts in the world w/ GF Team, regularly has Denilson Pimenta, Vitor Henriques, Vanessa Oliveira, Italo Lin, and Rodolph Viera teaching classes in there... really nothing more to be said about that, Mundial Winning Quality Talent in there and really fantastic fadda lineage "sapateiro" style game to be learned.

American Top Team/ Best Way Bjj - Danbury:
--------------------------------------------
Run by Luigi Mondelli, multiple time world champ under Dedeco (the champion maker) and all around SUPER nice guy, has an extremely well run team and produced some of the areas BEST mma talents including Ryan Quinn(who's since been moved over to ATT Coconut Creek) and Hitalo Machado )who i believe is running Formiga's MMA program now?).

Gracie Sports - Norwalk
Run by RED belt Marcio "Maccarro" Stambowsky! One of Rolles Gracies original black belts! Plays an indescriptable style of bjj that absolutely needs to be seen! Train with this guy atleast once, truly a living legend!

JiuJitsu and Strength Academy - Cromwell:
-----------------------------------------
Run by Matt Bryers, but bjj is run by Rafael "Formiga" Barbosa, multiple time world champion (and high level bjj phenom... have personally seen him literally DISMANTLE some of the state's other top black belts... he's really that good...) . Formiga also has his own school in Danbury I believe, since he has recently broken away from Luigi @ ATT.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tier 2:
(still provide high level, legit, bjj training)

Carlson Gracie CT: New Haven:
Run by Fabio Araujo, formerly a partner of roger denton's (i believe roger brought him to ct to run his bjj program?), is a student of Possidente, a top student of Perdneias(?) teaching a really slick super tight nova uniao style guard game, has created some of the states finest 1st gen black belt tourney monster's like Dom "The Crippler" Nusdeau & Chris Watson.

Gladiator Team CT - ???:
Run by legendary underground mma fighter Mario "Machete" DiNatale, Currently a top student of Gabriel "Gladiator" Santos , teaches authentic Carlson Gracie super aggressive top game style.

Underdog BJJ - Hartford?/Cromwell?:
Run by Fabio Teles, a straight badass Gracie Barra style game outta rio, this dude is cranking out some of the state's baddest bjj mma fighters right now, i.e Parker Porter...

Brian Olsen's Academy? - West Hartford?:
Run by former Wec Champion Brian Olsen, supposedly legendary Carlson Gracie / BTT Fighter Gabriel "Gladiator" Santos runs bjj classes.

Team Link - Enfield:
Solid Instruction, Producing Solid Tournament Competitors

Renzo Gracie Bjj - West Haven:
Solid Instruction, Producing Solid Tournament Competitors
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Tier 2a: Good Skill Level - *USE CAUTION*
DeLima Bjj - Danbury:
Run by Marco DeLima, has a checkered history with a certain member of the local bjj community, however appears to be creating some high level prospects regardless.

Ultimate MMA - North Haven:
Run by Andrew Calandrelli, was expelled by renzo gracie from his academy for pulling a Kevin Casey, Ari Bolden'd shaolin, and has made quite a few women in the local bjj scene more than uncomfortable enough to never return to his academy is barely scratching the surface of that spectacular story... regardless he's producing above average bjj competitors and mma fighters.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tier 3
(Definetely still legit enough bjj is starting to become more prevalent in the area and trickle down, but only stick around at this level if you absolutely cannot afford to go anywhere else, its still advantageuous to atleast be learning and training some bjj rather than none at all, but there is some seriously HIGH level bjj in this state now, so take advantage of it!)
------
the royce gracies ; the self defense centers of "this n that"; karate mcdojos teaching mma/bjj now...

Any insight into Daniel Gracie's RGA affiliate in Stamford, or C3 Athletics where they have Cesar Pereira, I believe a Carlson Black belt instructor?

Apparently, the affiliate in Stamford is the first school ever to mix styles!:D

FYI, Fabiano Teles runs the Underdog BJJ program and we are out of Hartford.

Cesar Pereira is Top Notch, should be considered Tier 1 w/out a doubt... can't believe i forgot about him... CT is becoming such a mecca for high level players right now its incredible!

Definetely not Carlson Gracie Style though, he's the founder of GFTeam and a former member of Gamma Filho, truly an exceptional instructor if you want to learn that crazy "fadda" / "Rio Ghetto" style of bjj (the only non gracie bjj style)...

If you're interested in that authentic Carlson Gracie style you've gotta find Mario "Machete" or go to Mass to train w/ Gabriel "Gladiator"... which is confusing because there are several "Carlson Gracie" affiliated schools in CT, but all their lineages go Carlson -> Pederneiras -> Possidente -> Araujo -> * , so even though they are technically carlson lineage, they're style is most decidedly not... which should not be necessarily considered a bad thing, all of fabio's students demonstate a really slick tight guard game... but if you're looking for that super high pressure dominating top game that made carlson's students famous... you won't find it...

Your mistaken. Julio Cesar Pereira is the founder of GFTeam, which makes him apart of CTMMA Fairfield. Cesar Pereira is a Carlson black belt in Stamford C3. Julio is 6th degree, Cesar is 3rd I believe.

Also Marcio "Macarrao" is Red/Black belt not Red. He is a Rolls Gracie black belt, not Rolles. Good job with the info though.

LMAO@ DeLima having a checkered history. You are very misinformed my friend.
Check out Team Delima Brazilian jiu jitsu association for details on Marco.

BTW - Formiga is also in Danbury.
