Bjj gym etiquette

Yea i just started bjj and was wondering that too actually, I thought coach or something would be appropriate, but everyone calls the instructors by their first name/nickname. I guess everyones different because I had a boxing/muay thai coach that would get pissed if you called him by his first name. Someone would say "Andy, can you show me the clinch again." and he'd say " Listen to me, outside the gym you can call me andy or whatever the fuck you want, inside here you call me coach." I think that's understandable though, because there should be a level of respect. I don't know if i feel comfortable calling saying "Matt, can you show me what i'm doing wrong?" talking to matt serra.

people keep saying "professor." I've never heard of this, is this a common courtesy title in bjj?

A lot of brazilian black belts seem to like to call themselves "professor."
Perhaps this has to do with the fact that the Portuguese word for "teacher" is "professor."

Also might have something to do with the fact that it can take longer to get a black belt than it does to get a PhD...

Since we're friends, when not in class, I just call him by his name, Travis. When we're in class, to show respect so the other younger folks do the same, I call him Coach Travis.

depends who I'm talking to my grappling coaches I call him byfirst name or coach, or tiny if I'm talking to Dodson, If i'm talking to Greg Jackson I just call him Greg, talking to Winklejohn i always address him by coach.

Everyone in our gym is pretty laid back and we treat each other more as family.
