At the end of the day, your lineage is going to be tied to whomever gives you your black belt.

Imo, lineage below black belt is kind of silly. Before then, it's just a way for people to say, "I train under so and so" while trying to make it seem cooler by calling it their "lineage".

What about a guy who gets his black belt from Prof. A and then receives his next degree(s) from Prof. B?

Dual lineage? Current and former lineage?

My instructor got his BB from Fabricio Werdum. During the whole year, I train with him, but when Fabricio comes to France, it's him who gives the belts. Should my lineage stops at the guy who gave me the belt or at the guy who taught me the stuff?

I am in the same situation, getting my blue that way. My coach, whom I train with all year, says I am a blue belt under the guy he got his black from, because he tied it around my waist and whatnot. But, I credit my coach and say I am a product of his teachings and count my lineage through him.

Edit - after re-reading, I may have confused you.

A = head honcho
B = my coach
C = me

My coach says my lineage is
A > C
meaning we both have our belts under the same guy

I say it is
A > B > C

JT Torres is probably going to be in this situation. My guess, is that even if/when Galvao gives him a stripe, his lineage will still be under Lloyd Irvin.

I'm sure in practice you can spin it any number of ways, but lineage is just a way of answering the question, "who gave you your black belt?"
