BJJ Dallas Texas

Location will be huge for OP for sure. Octavio like mentioned above is def a top guy.

I visited Carlos Machado's place a few years ago and there was probably close to 50 plus people for the class. There were several whites and blues, dozen or so purple belts, half a dozen brown belts and, a few black belts including Carlos. Carlos made me feel welcomed and we talked for several minutes. He even gave me pointers on my butterfly guard and kinda gave me a mini private lesson for 10 minutes or so. I wasn't charged for a drop in fee either.

Check out star.

Yousef is cool. The early am classes in Carrolton are pretty tough.

Also Carlos's place isn't that bad. I go quite a bit as my main instructor is a BB under Carlos and Taryn is no joke. Also, I think Brad might be teaching there on occasion as well.

A lot of great schools. My votes go to Cobra, Star, and octagon.

I'm partial to Marcelo Garcia of Dallas, as it is owned by one of my best friends (who happens to be a great instructor and super nice guy).

I also trained at Star for awhile (before MG Dallas opened), and the owner is also another great guy.

Having said that, Dallas is super spread out with bad traffic. Fortunately there are a lot of great schools and good black belts. Good luck!

@jbrandt - may I ask where you trained in Houston?

As you may know, most of the established home-grown schools in Houston trace their lineage to Carlos Machado. He is highly revered for his technical knowledge but also his interpersonal skills and just being a great guy. I went to a seminar with him and it was incredible.

Octavio "Ratinho" Couto at Octagon is a yoda of BJJ, knows everything, he's funny, cool and cares. He's the guy Comprido calls when he has questions.

I train currently at Gracie Barra Westchase under Ulpiano Malachias. He's a fantastic guy, really bleeds loyalty to GB, and has not only really good BJJ but also has a judo background. He got his first degree from Carlos Gracie Jr. I believe and then his 2nd degree from Draculino.

I love my teammates and friends I've made and my instructors. In Dallas, I'm going to focus more on No-Gi than competition BJJ due to my limited time, but I will forever value what he has taught. He's always going to be in my lineage on my way up to black because he gave me my blue!

Next Gen is great and they do have a GI Class with Josh Bosquez who is a Bad Ass too

Check out the schedule
http://www.nextgenerationmma.com/about/schedules/frisco.html

I have been there for about 2 years. Been training for 5 yrs.

Fantastic! I sent a message to CB on facebook and can't wait to hear back. I don't think there is anyone better to learn No-Gi from and it's good to know that Josh teaches the GI. Fantastic!

I don't know how long your going to be here but they have everything, and I mean EVERYTHING you need to train at his Gym.

I used to train with JD up in Plano he's out near the Dr. Pepper Star's center near George Bush tollway and Coit. Solid place with competitors, great lineage, and JD is a killer.

Gracie Plano is also worth a look as I know a few people who are very happy there. http://www.graciegymtexas.com/

I'll be moving to the Dallas area soon as well and looking in the plano area. These two gyms have popped up. Could you tell me more about them? Thanks!

That's nice to hear, I drive by that gym all the time. Kudos on continuing your training up in Dallas.

Sure. JD's (under Robson Moura) got guys who compete in the big BJJ tournaments and a few ammy fighters with one pro currently. In the past he's coached some really good dudes like Hector Munoz. He's got several very large very strong black belts and he himself is a technical strong dude. There's a good range of blues and purples, and a few browns now as well. Pevand the Muay Thai coach is a super cool guy as well. Basically a well rounded gi/nogi/MMA/Muay Thai program.

Gracie Plano has good gi BJJ they've got a couple of solid mid rank guys, but I think Marcus is the only black belt. The Muay Thai coach used to teach at JD's and I always remember him being a solid coach. They bring in some big names to visit their school.

You can't really lose with either. Check out both see how you vibe with the people, atmosphere, and the coaches. My advice is really spend a week getting to know each gym before you decide.

JD Shelly trained under Alan Mohler all the way through being a very advanced brown, then elected to have one of the guys from Alliance give him his black belt (Jacare iirc, the older one), right?
