Bill Starr Eclipse - Deadlifts

Hey guys,

Started the eclipse version of the Bill Starr 5x5 3 weeks back and it's going great so far.

I have a question regarding deadlifts on Wednesday however. 5 sets of 5 seems to be quite a bit, it seriously taxes my central nervous system, not to mention I'm in the gym for close to 2 hours with the 5 minutes rest periods between every exercise.

Is it advisable to switch to 1 set of 5 deadlifts a la Starting Strength? It seems I could kill 2 birds with one stone this way...

5x5 Deadlifts are good for the soul, but hard to recover from. Decide on your priorities.
 
You should do it. Korte's 3x3 (the best template I've used) has you doing 8 sets of 5 reps on the deadlift three times a week for the first phase. All the while doing the same for the squat. I modified it by using front squats instead (long femurs, front feels more natural). So you should give it a try and reap the benefits.
