Biggest Bench in The UFC

if 'Grand Daddy' means the most ridiculously overrated exercise...I think you're onto something.
I wouldn't go as far as calling it overrated. I mean it's definitely earned it's place in the weightlifting regime, my man. Helps you develop that chest you always wanted and besides, dude, it's just a fun exercise to do.

Absolutely, my man. There's a reason why it's not the priority for fighters and this thread is not to be taken super seriously. Still, it is quite interesting topic. Have you had any experience with training MMA fighters, bro?

Yes. Nobody famous, though.

Not much use for the bench, as most athletes seem to come to me with some sort of shoulder injury. Spend almost as much time doing injury management and rehab (and restoring compromised movement patterns, increasing joint mobility, etc.). Really, once a fighter has a decent strength based, there is no need to go particularly heavy on any barbell exercise. And I am a big fan of strength work on a personal level.

Given that so much of the power generated when fighting comes from the legs and back and transfers through the core, it is quite possible to train a fighter and never have them bench. I am not saying it is a worthless exercise, but time can be better spent in other areas.

And bodybuilding-type workouts are worthless for fighters. You do not train just muscles, you need to train groups and movement patterns while lifting. The occasional isolation exercise should be used to correct a deficiency, which can include a weakness in a specific muscle or muscle group. But grinding away on rep after rep compromises recovery, and takes away from the athletes skill-based training.

for me,its annoyingly something I don't lose much strength with after an injury or a long period off, would rather that be the case with deadlift, squats or overhead press,3 exercises,i hold in much higher esteem than the bench, which again for me,outwith the bicep curl is the gayest exercise out there 'bro'

believe it or not but matt hamill could bench close to 500

Bench is the cuckold of strength exercises. Fools think it's the granddaddy, but the true pater familias is the deadlift.

I'm sure Brock had a big bench press #.

I'd say someone shorter and really stocky probably had the best bench. Paul harris maybe. Not currently in the UFC though. But he's solid as they come and likely over 200 pounds. A 400 pound bench press wouldn't be unheard of for a guy like him. Purely speculation as I don't even know if he benches.

No idea why you would consider the bench the grand daddy of strength exercises. Weightlifting precedes powerlifting by more than half a century, and the squat and the deadlift train larger, stronger muscle groups than the bench press.
Squat, deadlift, and bench are considered the big 3 in power lifting.

Hendricks, Rumble, Jared Rosholt, Yoel Romero, Derrick Lewis, Shawn Jordan

Former pro football players - schaub and meat head probably could have done 400+ back in day

MMA fighters or really any fighters dont really train for strength like that. Its more explosive power and most importantly endurance.

Absolutely, bro, but when you think about it you know, the bench has always been used as a proxy in the Colleges around the world to determine who's the baddest dude on the campus. It's just one of those things the dudes really appreciate.

I'm so happy I was taken in by seasoned lifting vets who had me focus on squats and deadlifts over bench. Believe it or not, they do carry over to your bench if you are performing the bench press with perfect form. Plus, I'm wider and heavier than my buddies who just do chest 3 days a week and wonder why they can't get their weight over 200 lbs. Keep that big chest, little core look to yourself. I wanna be thick, solid, and tight.

Yes, I know they are considered the big three in powerlifting. They are the only three in competition.

And you would be surprised how many athletes cannot bench 405 with good form. It is amazingly rare in football. Far more common in throwers, particularly shot-putters.

No point in saying "probably." Until you know that someone has done it properly, there is no use for speculation.

They're both former lineman in the NFL. They needed to hit at least 25-30 on the 225 bench test at the combine to be taken seriously. That equates to about a 400 lb max.
