In a "real" fight, yes, that was a terrible standup.

This was an exhibition guys, and Cormier was guaranteed the easy win, so with that perspective, Big John did great for the fans. If it were Cormier on top of Jones, it would have been a horrible horrible mistake to stand them up.

Hate to break it to people but the ground is part of the sport. If you're on the ground getting smothered and the guy on top is attacking, it is up to the guy on bottom to get up or stop being taken down altogether. It isn't thrilling but it is perfectly within the rules.

Part of me thinks he was responding to the restlessness of the crowd because, yeah, those standups were not warranted (particularly on one of the two occasions).

The refs work hard, but they are human and they are influenced by other factors in the course of a fight. I remember Bisping flashing, a "what the fuck" glare/shrug to Yves Lavigne when Kennedy had him down in the 5th round, which prompted Yves to stand them up moments after lol.

He landed some nice punches and elbows on the ground. Watch again. He went for a sub and was trying to free his leg to improve his position from half guard. Anderson didn't even have full guard and Cormier was landing. Terrible standup
