Now, obviously a pure Judo guy would likely submit a pure Greco guy once it got to the ground. But which style is better adapted for the clinch in MMA - Judo or Greco? With Greco you don't have to worry about going from gi to no-gi, but Judo has a lot of sweeps and trips that are illegal in Greco.

Its easier for the judoka to get the throw once in the clinch but the greco guy is better at getting said clinch.

As a Judo guy, I tend to like Greco for many situations (mostly because you don't turn your back quite as often, and you're better at getting wrestling clinches) in MMA, but Judo footsweeps are so money it's not even funny.

Both.

But the foot sweeps are an area where Judo has a clear advantage over both Greco and Freestyle/Folkstyle guys.

Really nobody else specializes in that ashiwaza/foot sweeps area. Rob Koll is good at them but he has a judo background as well as his NCAA wrestling background.

Greco, Judo and BJJ form a unison that is nothing short of amazing. Simply put, both and if possible a third too. :)

For pure clinchwork Greco tends to come out on top though but they all offer fantastic techniques that can be worth gold when rolling.

I'd say this. As a greco guy who does judo recreationaly, I'd say Greco is great for dominating the clinch game, along with incorporating trips and hip throws involving the use of legs is the best bet. Clinching against the cage you need strong leg attacks, i.e. freestyle or folk. So a combo of all three is ideal.

Both

Greco for NOGI clinching and upper body throws and attacks.

Judo for ALL foot and leg attacks. A judoka adapted to NOGI is a frightening person, many ex-USSR freestyle wrestlers are already frightening people.

I agree they both give you advantages you wont learn the clinch no gi game without doing greco the grips and setups but Judo gives you the trips and allot of damn throws endless amounts of techniques from the clinch.

muay thai :) in all seriousness its probably easier to learn a few foot sweeps than it is for most people to adapt to no gi, but the success of either will depend on how well the individual can adapt
it to mma.i predominantly train judo every once in a while i train with some free style guys and i have no trouble in the clinch.

Judo has trips, leg attacks, sacrifice throws, etc. They generally require less effort. However, at the same time, Greco is a no gi art and I can't think of any Judo throws from back control.

the gi is essential for a lot of throws

the difference between underhooks, overhooks, and bodylocks and having gi grips is significant
