Can we say one guy is definitively better than the other guy? I think they're dead even. Great rivalry. My hunch is Bivol will beat Beterbiev in the 3rd fight (due to Beterbiev age and decline). But skill for skill, i don't think you can conclusively say who the best LHW of the 2017-2025 era is.

Bivol is 34, Beterbiev is 40. The 34-year-old version of Beterbiev that beat Gvozdyk is better than Bivol. Right now, they’re even.
It’s hard to say; I think Beterbiev has been improving technically while regressing physically. But the version that beat Gvozdyk with today’s skill set, I have no doubt that mythical fighter would KO Bivol lol.

Speaking of the Gvozdyk fight I've wondered:

Who would win between that version of Gvozdyk and Bivol if they fought today?

Also, how would prime Kovalev have fared against Beterbiev when they initially proposed the fight (which Team Beterbiev declined) in 2015?

Not sure I buy Beterbiev from 5-6 years ago definitely beats Bivol.

Lesser fighters than Bivol went 10 & 12 rounds with that version of Beterbiev, it’s really not a far stretch that Bivol could do better.

You make it sound like those lesser fighters survived when they didn't. It's unlikely that Bivol would do better against a younger Beterbiev. There's a reason they dragged this fight out for years. It wasn't until Beterbiev looked human against Yarde that they finally decided to fight him.

Both Bivol and Beterbiev have fought down to their competition in the past, i don't think that's indicative of how they would've looked against each other back then. I can find a couple of fights from 5-6 yrs ago where Bivol looks absolutely piss poor. The Beterbiev that fought Gvozdyk was a force to be reckoned with, just a machine. Would've been interesting to see how he would've done against Bivol today.

Beterbiev was less active after those big middle rounds, I wonder if age is catching up to him. Although a big factor was also Bivol adjusting and moving better.

I agree that a few years younger Beterbiev should be favored, but now they are even (and it could tilt Bivol's way a bit in the next fight).

I agree, one thing I will say is that the beterbiev who fought bivol was probably the least muscular looking I've seen him in the ring. He used to be absolutely diced up, but this was also the same guy who was getting dropped by lesser fighters
