Best/Worst refs? Reasons? (GIFs of terrible reffing welcome)

In your mind who are the best and worst refs in the sport?

Herb is really good at a lot of things, but stopping fights at the right time he is not. That is a huge con for me and can't help but call him out for it. It actually affects peoples' records and in a sport where a win or a loss can decide the fate of your career it is pretty terrible.

To me Big John seems the most stable overall. When he is reffing, I feel at ease.

What bout you guys, reasons?

You can't go wrong with big John. He has the most experience, and he's actually big enough to separate the two fighters if necessary.
Percival or Mazzagatti for just bleed.

I think Big John is GOAT ref, Herb is ok but not the biggest thing as Dana state. also I can't stand Yamasaki, I also think Margliota is hilarious as hell

Big John.

Anyone who hasn't heard his recent interview on Joey Diaz's The Church of What's Happening Now podcast should listen to it.

He gives some great insight of what goes through a ref's mind when his is in the cage - he speaks a lot about Lawler v McDonald and why he thought Rory was aspirating blood from a cut in his mouth, etc., very interesting stuff....

Best ref: Rosenthal. He should be in his final form, we're ready to have him back.


Worst ref: Mazagatti. Simply because I HATE how he never ever steps between the fighters after the bell sounds between rounds. He doesn't even so much as stick his hand between them. He's like 5 feet away from the action, and once the horn sounds, he meekly sort of moves his hand up 2 inches as if it were a mere afterthought. Most refs, once we're inside 10 seconds left in the round, will get closer to the action, ready to put their arm between the fighters once the horn sounds.

I'm not asking you to go into full body cavity search mode like Yves Lavigne, but at least put your arm up.

Yves Lavigne in the Brown vs. Sell fight is one of the worst performances I've ever seen.

He literally pulled him off! Then just says "JUST KIDDING" and runs out of view telling them to continue lol. What in the hell? Then he lets Brown beat on a clearly out fighter for way too long and finally stops it. Embarrassing.
