Over 5 years there are enough debates between GSP, Silva, Mighty Mouse, Fedor and Jones. But what about shorter spans? Examples:

Best 1 fight: Matt Serra
Best 2 fight (in a row): tie: Forrest Griffin & Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou Nkamhoua
Best 6 months: Shogun (April 2005 - August 2005)
Best calendar year: Crocop, (2004)
Best 2 years Gomi (2004-2005)
Best 3 years: Hughes (2001-2003)

Caveat: I left out the 90's legends, like Igor Yaroslavovych Vovchanchyn who was 42-3 (1) before he lost to Coleman in the 2000 OWGP.
