I won't be using the laptop for anything other than online classes.

Suggestions?

Do you really need advice on what laptop to get to use the internet?

Just go buy any laptop made in the last 5 years and you'll be fine.

So one of those $150 chrome books?

And yes, I need advice on shit I know nothing about.

chrome books are cheap but don't generally come w/ like a full Operating System and definitely not MS Office or anything like that

I think you can cop a pretty cheap ASUS or ACER laptop for like 250-300 that actually has better RAM specs and larger HDD and everything

500 is a lot man, yeah I can clearly see you know nothing.... I paid 150 for mine on black Friday and I use it for business.... it does the job, so why would I buy something more expensive.... stop making your parents overspend like an idiot

I have a $250 HP Chromebook and a $300 Lenovo. The Chromebook runs a lot better, but you miss out on Windows OS which I like. If you need Microsoft Office and you can't use the online version, go with a cheap Lenovo or HP laptop. The Lenovo was really slow when I first got it, I cleaned it up a little but it still can't really handle things like Adobe Creative Cloud which I use quite a bit.

I really like the Chromebook, if you don't need a specific OS then I'd go with that.

I like hp but the best deal is going to be the best sale u can find. Check redflagdeals or slickdeals

The ASUS VivoBook F510UA is our top choice of laptop in $500 price range right now. It offers all the latest set of hardware specifications which includes latest 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U Quad-Core processor, 8GB of RAM and 1TB of HDD.

Just go to bestbuy.com and pick something out. At that price point anything you get will be fine

Get one with a digitizer to take notes. I use one to teach and take all my personal notes. They're all in place, not in a million sheets of paper in a hundred different notebooks. Maybe like 1% of my students use them though and it makes no sense.

Some Chromebooks can run Android apps. Mine does, but I haven't tried the MS Office app yet. I've heard it needs work. With Chromebooks, you can add Gallium OS, an Ubuntu based distro, designed to run on Chromebooks. I think it may have Libre Office. For a lot of people, Libre Office is just fine, but others can't do without MS Office. Also, Crouton allows running some LInux distros on Chromebook. I have Xenial on mine and can use Libre Office, but I haven't found it necessary to use it yet. Google docs works fine for me. If one needs Photoshop and GIMP isn't good enough, then ChromeOS or Linux may not work for you.

Thread updated and thanks for the advice. I decided to use your money instead of my parents.

Your budget is 2,500 for a general use laptop?

You can get a decent laptop for 300 bucks. 2,500 bucks puts you on the market for a high-end gaming laptop.

He changed the title because he is a angry little boy.

Yep, gonna spend some tax credit money.

I feel like this thread isn’t as incendiary as TS intended it to be.
