Best conditioning besides rolling?

These guys talk about it better than I can, and have the legitimacy to boot.

Rafa mentions the same principles in this video.

The whole video is good, but specifically as far as the mentality goes, he talks about it at 3:40.

Notice that in the first video they do talk about taking your time and investigating a position and feeling it out. But once you know how to do it properly, you should be able to make a bit of a drill out of it, not just listlessly repping out two or three then switching partners.

Leg drag is a good one. Standing above guard, take the grips on the pants, and leg drag, squat low and tight, stand up and repeat. If you can bang out ten before you get winded or cramped up you're probably already in some pretty great shape. I find them to be killer. It can be difficult to find a partner to do this kind of drilling with you though, if it is not a regular part of your gyms training.

oh, and big thanks for this post, too. It's golden.

dang. nice advice.

I could have actually got a LOT more detailed, and added more reasoning behind what i posted...If i went full on it would be a 4 page essay..but just decided to give the condensed version this time.

I've been hanging out with wrestlers/BJJ/MMA guys my entire life..I picked up a lot of tricks from them and their coaches..and then I researched the everlicing shit out of them, and then finally experimented a lot (i've cut weight 20 times now...5 for tournaments, 15 for practice)...the post I made is what I had most luck with..you can have your real body weight back within 6-8 hours..if your weigh in is the night before, you can be fully recovered by morning...btw, OP, it's late for you now, but you should REALLY try a few practice rounds of this next time...just so you know how you'll feel the next day...it's generally a bad idea to do this for the first time right before a tournament...too late for that now, though. Good luck! And honestly, 5 pounds...You're fine. I sometimes do that accidentally. :D

The first vid was perfect, thanks mate.

I agree, whenever I try get someone to do some drilling, it ends up being a "but what if I did this" situation or they just want to do 2 reps and roll.

I like circuit training for match lengths with short breaks. So for a blue belt match, I'd do 2 minutes of burpees, two minutes of TRX rows, and two minutes of sandbag clean and jerks. Then I'd rest a minute, and do a different set for 6 minutes. This sort of routine melts fat and builds both cardio and muscular endurance.

Besides of everything thats been said BB complexes and swimming are good options but sport specific activities might be best.

yea i woke up this morning at 163.4 not even a full pound over target weight. but thats without anything in my body. i have to be 162.5....next time ill be able to make feather weight and 149.9 if i do that ahead of time.

As someone already said- HIIT training.

If you have a kettle bell, I highly recommend the following. It will smoke you hardcore.

Do 10 kettle bell swings, then one burpee. Then 10 swings and 2 burpees, 10 swings 3 burpees, and so on till 10 burpees. If you can do this under 5 minutes, you are a freaking beast.

If you need an easier start, even doing 1 swing, 1 burpee, 2 swings, 2 burpees, etc - up till 10 will give a good work out.

I also like working with ropes gone wild type work outs- smokes core, covers grip strength, etc.
