Moving to bc tomorrow from the Seattle area and I want to keep training.
I'll be living on the UBC campus if that helps.

Cheers!!!

Gracie Barra Vancouver, which is on Broadway Street (relatively close to UBC) is good. Headed by Gracie Barra black belt Rodrigo Carvalho.

Alternatively, Universal MMA is worth checking out. Rickson Gracie black belt Shane Rice used to instruct there, but I heard rumor that he may have left.

Premier Martial Arts in Richmond isn't bad either.

Lots of good, regular classmates.

Do you have access to a car?

If so I would recommend Marcus Soares. He has a location in Burnaby which is a bit of a commute but the classes are two hours long.

I have some friends who train at Dynamic. It will be closer to you and can get there by skytrain along the Canada line.

Lots of good Jiu Jitsu in the Vancouver area. Depends on where you're willing to travel to and what you're looking for.

Gracie Barra - About 30 min from UBC on 99 B Line, probably your closest major gym. Great instructor Rodrigo Carvalho. Some people aren't into the whole GB vibe, but it's a good school.

Marcus Soares - If you have a car this is a great option. Marcus is now an 8th degree black belt, you're not going to get that kind of experience anywhere else in the country.

Dynamic MMA - Located in Richmond, which isn't as far as it sounds. Many students like myself travel to Dynamic from UBC with no problem. Since it is my home gym I'm obviously biased, but coach Adam Ryan is very knowledgeable and awesome. Good mix of gi and no-gi Jiu Jitsu and a solid MMA fight team if you're interested.

Studeo55 - More of a personal training place that does all the trendy workout stuff you'd expect, but a good black belt, John Kefallonitis teaches there. Not a very wide range of students, but good instruction.

Tactix - Smaller gym, located on Hornby st., downtown making it relatively close to UBC. Mainly other stuff like krav maga with some Jiu Jitsu taught by new black-belt Bruno Capdeville.

Universal MMA - Would have been a great choice before Shane left. Apparently Leo Xavier is a pretty good instructor but I have no experience with him. Great location but expensive.

Infighting - Coach Richie Yip is a brown belt and is a pretty nice guy. He does lots of videos on youtube so you can see if you think his instruction would be good for you. Great location but small and limited training partners.

West Coast BJJ - Headed by Don Whitefield, de la Riva black belt, West Coast has locations all over the lower mainland. I have no idea what the quality level is since many of these locations have purple belt instructors but Don is a solid teacher.

Primier Martial Arts - Located in Richmond I have no idea about this club, except that a I've rolled with some of their students and they seem very technical and knowledgeable. The coach is black belt Trevor Clarkson.

Apex Martial Arts - Another small club in Richmond, The instructors are all recent brown belts who have some of the best competition pedigrees in the city. Associated with North Van BJJ.

North Van BJJ - Great school, great instruction, lots of great training partners. Only draw back is it's located in North Vancouver.

Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu BC - Lower Mainland's newest school headed by competition savvy brown belt Giacomo Zanini. One of the most technical guys I know with multiple IBJJF medals to his credit recently switched to this team from another local team so I see that as an endorsement, I guess.

There may be some other schools teaching Jiu Jitsu (and if I missed your gym I apologize), but those are the main gyms in town. Try out several and make your decision based on where you feel the atmosphere and training most meet your needs. Best of luck finding a gym.

As an update: Tactix and Studeo55 no longer offer BJJ. Marcus now has a location downtown.

Outside of Marcus, I can only recommend dynamic in Richmond... 30-45min from downtown, if you can manage the drive. Unfortunately, nearly every one of their classes is around rush hour so transportation is a hassle.

Where is Marcus' downtown school located?

Nice, you're only 3 hours away from Fierce Studio in Victoria. Head instructor is a pretty legit Pedro Sauer brown belt, from what I hear.

THIS! i know most would say you should train with someone close by so you can get daily access to quality instruction and challenging training partners, but Ari has proven you can become a grappling phenom by just seeing your coach every few months and occasionally rolling with white belts. it's truly a paradigm shift in jiu jitsu training methodology!

Get FIERCE!

*Update* Marcus offers beginner classes on Monday and Wednesdays at 6 before the regular class.

Some days I'll do the beginner 6:00 - 7:30 the regular class 7:30 - 9:30 back to back. That's 3.5 hours of mat time a week.

You go once a week? Which day?

Hey guy,

Have any of you been to Universals North Vancouver location? Know anything about the resident Juijitsu Instructor there?

Regards,
