I keep keys there. In college, cell phones weren't really a thing so keys went in left hand pocket and fifth pocket got my change, especially quarters (laundry and arcade.)

Back in the 1800s, cowboys used to wear their watches on chains and kept them in their waistcosts. To keep them from getting broken, Levis introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch
 
I clip my keys to it and key my coke I mean flash drive it there.

For real tho, that pocket has kept my coke flat before when being patted up and they didnt search that for some reason.
