Berlin, Germany: Police arrests 6 Amri friends for Marathon attack plan

So, here we go again.German police have arrested 6 men from Anis Amri's circle (Amri was the Christmas Market terrorist) because they had learnt of a plan to attack today's Berlin Semi-Marathon event with knives.

Suspects between 18 and 21 years old, police say they're still investigating but believe that was a close one. One of the flats searched now had already been searched after Amri's attack. One of the suspects had a specifically sharpened blade in his possession. Also, dogs trained to recognize explosives seem to have got wind of something in a cellar.

32,000 runners have participated and many spectators have been on the streets for the semi-marathon today.

UPDATE: German tabloid Bild is reporting that the mode of planned attack was not knives (though we do not know ehat it was instead).

To be fair this sounds like the police have done a good job. Knew those guys were up to no good and stayed on them.
Of course, that doesn't address the larger issue. But given the circumstance that you had a few guys ready to go.
It looks like the cops had that under control from the start.

We need to make it easier to deport or incarcerate those people in some sort of "holding camp" if you can't deport them.
Not sure how you would do that within in the law. And the Germans are not to keen on putting people into camps again.
But having those guys run free is extremely dangerous and expensive.

Yeah, true. Apparently there was no immediate danger in the sense that there was constant surveillance (then agaon, we know what happened in the Amri case).

Good job to the police here. I wish stories like this were more common. So frustrating to see someone "under surveillance" still be given enough time and room to kill dozens. Glad cops went in preemptively once they had enough evidence

They got them this time. But there will be some in the future that will escape the authorities. Ultimately the Germans will have to be honest about dealing with Islam and Islamic religiosity. They are constrained by laws and their history, which the Islamists will exploit.
