TLDR: Big Ben's non stop pressure and adamantium chin would pose a fuckload of problems for Overeem, even in his conservative Econoreem form
So Overeem has been on a huge run lately, leading a lot of people to believe he can likely avenge all of his UFC losses. While I think this is a high possibility for Browne and an almost certain possibility for what's left of Bigfoot Silva, I do not think Econoreem defeats Rothwell. Obviously it's possible, it's the HW division, but it would be a retardedly difficult task.
A lot of people's analysis of the first fight was that Overeem was outstriking Rothwell and just happened to get caught by an overhand and lost. That's not how I interpreted it. Rothwell basically came out, no fucks given, and stalked the absolute shit out of Reem. The entire time, he's eating all of his strikes and kicks without even budging, all while timing his uppercut and overhand. Not only did Rothwell eat all of his strikes, but even before the KO, he stuffed a takedown and wobbled Reem with an uppercut shortly thereafter. Then came the KO.
One of the biggest reasons this matchup is hard for Reem is because of Rothwell's style, but also because of his chin. Rothwell legitimately has one of the best chins of all time. It's actually Mark Hunt tier.
He was trying to get up while Cain was punching him:
Walked into a fucking overhand from Hunt, who then tried to walk away thinking the fight was over:
Got hit with a baseball swing overhand from JDS and only took 1 step backwards:
Ate a spinning back-elbow from Schaub:
Arlovski did stop him with strikes, but Arlovski has cracked 3 legendary chins himself in Cabbage, Roy Nelson, and Rothwell. He basically hit Rothwell with everything and the kitchen sink.
Reem going for a KO would not only be really difficult to pull off, but would also leave him open to counters from Big Ben who's always dangerous no matter what.
I think Econoreem's best chance would be to outpoint him, but can you confidently say that with Rothwell's non-stop pressure style that he wouldn't eventually land something? Reem has still shown defensive woes recently, including getting rocked by Roy Nelson and getting backed up against the cage against AA and unloaded on. Granted, Reem blocked a lot of those punches, but Rothwell is way more aggressive than the AA that fought Reem. Imagine Reem getting backed up against the cage like that multiple times.
Thoughts sherbros?
