Ben Askren is the real deal

What He Proved
- Can come back from a beating
- Is douchey about admitting he shouldn't have won

What Got Exposed
- Takedowns were stuffable
- Takedown defense is highly questionable
- Striking looks mediocre

If Askren was the one who got illegal kneed, he would have taken the DQ win and bragged after IMHO
He didn’t get exposed for his bad striking. His striking is shit but he doesn’t need striking to run down to his opponent’s punches

Still not sold on him, let's see what happens in his next fight where hopefully there won't be an early stoppage again.

Of course he is. You're a fucking retard if you think he isn't.

Highly impressive imo.

He took out a juiced up Robbie after taking some pretty heavy damage.

I'm definitely on the Funky bandwagon baby!

Why couldn't they get a restart? They should append the rules for instances like this.

I was pissed about this being stopped but no, there is nothing to be done about this once the call is made. If you open the door to restarts, you'll have guys like Chiesa protesting legit stoppages and making a mess of things. The ref fucked up here. Dana can set it straight with a rematch. That's it.

Askren made a huge error and all of the grapplers out here saw it. Ben recovered and pressed Robbie against the cage and methodically took him down and proceeded to gain control. Ben did not look that bad aside from an error on his part.

That one error led to a comedy of other errors that very nearly cost him the fight. Where was Askren's defense when Robbie lit him up with right hands as he clung on to the left, like a stupid little robot?

And Askren methodically took Robbie down and gained control after all of that.

Having a good moment, which resulted in a bad stoppage, doesn't seem quite as significant as the kind of trouble that Robbie had him in. If not for the referee's blunder, Robbie might well have survived this bad position and eventually finished a battered, physically exhausted Askren.

Ben was not going to get tired where he was at. On the ground is where Ben wants the fight to be.

What was making Askren tired were the knees, body shots, and concussive punches he was eating any time he wasn't controlling Robbie. He had about two minutes to finish Lawler and then the fight was back on the feet, where Askren (very clearly) did not want it to be.

But I'll tell you what: let's both stop pretending like we know how the fight would have played out if Dean didn't fuck up. It was a bad call. I think that a rematch is in order.

In chess sometimes the match ends in a draw due to one player being out of time and the other not having sufficient material(typically only a king). This was like the mma version of that

And Askren was able to take it to the ground where he wanted to be None of what you said changes that. Robbie got his strikes in and Robbie ended up with Askren in control. Askren was in a postion where he was recovering.

In the next round Askren would have methodically taken down Robbie again and would not have made his original error again.

He showed exactly what we all knew, poor striking and great grappling. Were people expecting K1 Askren or something?

I've been saying FOR AGES what he proved last night: Best welterweight in the world. To beat Robbie proved it, as Robbie was champ when everyone was crying about "Boring Ben" and "Ben-Smoke Break-Askren. He is an absolute fucking combat genius, developed one of the most heady and unique wrestling styles ever, a style which Aljo Steling admits is something he copied his whole career (hence his name Funkmaster). Askren even murked the fuck up on Weidman in wrestling. He is next level shit, much, much, much better than Khabib. People assume because he is a slow, feel them out type of starter that he is not that good, but he is impossible to kill and is terminator, absolute savage.
