When will these knuckleheads learn, if you want to make tea money you have to fight when the spotlight is on?

nah.

all risk, no reward to fight Stephens on short notice...it gains him nothing other than his regular paycheque. he still would have to wait for Max to win the belt and earn real money.

I agree with this not just for this fight, but for life in general. It's always high risk high reward.

His decision in the end, maybe he's not in a hurry :)

Didn't Dana just say people better take the fights offered to them?

Yeah. Considering how stringent the UFC has become, he'll have nothing to gain from it, won't even get extra cash most likely. Why should he risk everything for the UFC when its only the UFC who has to gain from it?

Apparently when you win the belt you're allowed to go on vacation for a year, so he's waiting.

It started with Jon Jones. Before that, the general attitude of fighters is that they’ll fight anyone placed in front of them.

Now, we have all these entitled young guys.

“Sure, I’ll step up to fight when it’s MY opportunity but ‘no’ if otherwise.”

Belts don't mean anything besides a lot more money, historical recognition as one of the best in your weight class and having your name alongside other all-time greats in the history books...

Right, World Championships totally "don't mean shit"...

This is just MY opinion:
If a fighter is to prove he's the best, why not take on ALL comers? Replacement fights, last minute fights or whatever else. They say "I didn't train for him/her" but the replacement didn't train for them either. I just think that's one of the best ways to prove you're the best.

Ignorant.

Belts mean a HUGE difference in fighter pay.

Plus exposure, endorsements, etc.
MAJOR financial implications to being champ or not.

Fans look at an inactive fighter more favorably than a fighter coming off a loss. Nothing to gain, everything to lose. Foolish pride isn't a career move worth making.

Frankie Edgar fought Ortega as a fill in last moment and Ortega got the title shot off that win, can he return the favor? Apparently not.

100% agree!

Ortega is lame and a coward for not taking the short notice fight. He should have the advantage, having a full training camp and fighting a guy ranked lower than him.

If he's not confident he can win that short-notice fight, then he doesn't deserve a title shot.
