China is preparing an air defence identification zone (ADIZ) in the South China Sea, two years after it announced a similar one in the East China Sea, according to sources close to the People’s Liberation Army and a defence report.

But one source said the timing of any declaration would depend on security conditions in the region, particularly the United States’ military presence and diplomatic ties with neighbouring countries.

“If the US military keeps making provocative moves to challenge China’s sovereignty in the region, it will give Beijing a good opportunity to declare an ADIZ in the South China Sea,” the source said.

The revelation came ahead of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, a security forum attended by defence officials from various nations, including Admiral Sun Jianguo and US Secretary of Defence Ash Carter. Disputes in the South China Sea are expected to head the agenda of the three-day event, which starts on Friday.

Top Chinese and US officials will also meet next week for their annual strategic and economic dialogue in Beijing.
In a written response to the South China Morning Post on the zone, the defence ministry said it was “the right of a sovereign state” to designate an ADIZ.

“Regarding when to declare such a zone, it will depend on whether China is facing security threats from the air, and what the level of the air safety threat is,” the statement said.

China set up its first ADIZ in the East China Sea in November 2013 to cover the Diaoyu Islands, which Japan calls the Senkakus. Both countries claim the uninhabited outcrops but Tokyo controls them. The ADIZ triggered a backlash from Japan, South Korea and the US.

Do you know how many assets we have deployed in the South china sea? a lot and we lifted the arms ban on Vietnam. And i believe we are expanding on our bases all over the pacific

And yet he won't get on the phone with Beijing and tell them that they're crossing the line. All containment, no head-on confrontation with the problem.

"Hey man, you crossed the line!" What's that do besides making you look weak. If we say something like that, are backing it up? Gonna shoot down their planes? If not, words are worthless. Obama has, to his credit, taken concrete actions that have shook China. The embargo lift on Vietnam most recently. He is, as he should be, expanding our sphere of influence and isolating our rivals by taking the game to their backyard while cleaning up our own.

Once China complete those bases in South China Sea, they're going to be able to support a substantial force in the region. Each of those airfields they are building are capable of supporting an entire squadron of fighter jets plus support planes. Realistically, China has already established a foothold there. There is no way to remove them unless you fight them in a relatively large scale regional war, which is unlikely to happen.

At this point, the most prudent thing to do is apply political, economic and limited military pressure to get China to stop claiming everything. Force them to sit down with ASEAN members in mediated multilateral negotiations to clearly establish rules of conduct and zones of influence. They can have a piece of the pie if they play nice, but not whole pie to themselves.

Here's a first guys: calling someone out on their bullshit, to their face, makes you look weak.

Spare me the rhetoric.

WTF you guys arguing about?
Space prefers the Trumpian approach of hollow bluster in seeking to contain China. I prefer the approach where we speak softly and carry a big stick.

Before his term is over, we should prank Obama. Wake him up in the middle of the night and tell him Russia and China just launched their entire nuclear arsenal at us and see what he does. Would be top-quality TV.

I think the end goal is not to confront China as much as get them to play nice. They're certainly going to be a top tier power, with the world's largest industrial base and growing military capabilities. That's why I view South China Sea as an important milestone. The world can either go down the path of another Cold War, or we can develop a regional mechanism to resolve disputes through a multilateral approach instead of trying to intimidate each other with force.

Existential angst aside, the Cold War wasn't so bad for the US all things considered. But this isn't a war, hot or cold. China and US have too many common interests for that. Obama's entire Asian strategy has been to maximize the US's bargaining strength at the table. Which is what everyone is doing.

we need to stop trading with china....period
fucking cheating ass motherfuckers in their olympics

head on confrontation has worked exceedingly well as far as US policy goes. after our sweeping victory in Vietnam, and crushing victories in Afghanistan and the way we turned Iraq into the jewel of middle east, i am ASTOUNDED that anyone would ever think about NOT sticking our dick into a foreign policy blender...

Who said anything about starting a war?

I'm talking about not pussyfooting around the issue with China.

Even during the height of the Cold War, US had a large volume of trade with Soviet Union and never broke diplomatic relationship. Your proposal is about as realistic and workable as my dick doubling in size.

"head on confrontation" is what you said. Which, in foreign policy, means an ultimatum, which generally, as a rule, leads to conflict of the armed variety.
If China 'confronted' us about why we have naval bases everywhere, we'd tell them to go suck one. Why do you think China would respond any differently to us opposing what THEY think is in their best issues? especially in a hostile manner.
