In S.T.A.R.S and WAKO and ISKA who got love for guys like Peter Cunningham, Jean Yves Theriault, Don the dragon Wilson, Maurice Smith, Dennis Alexio, Troy Dorsey, Benny the Jet and Manson Gibson and Rick Roufus.
I love watching the old school guys. Don especially, throwing sidekicks too the face like a jab. Much more karate/TKD orientated styles which is coming full circle into todays modern MMA scene a lot of these techniques are being utilized more often today. Of course after K1 and before obviously this has been the norm in the great sport of kickboxing. Who has seen some of these legends live? Trained with them? influenced? related? ...that's all I got really just hoping too discuss about these guys

Loved watching this stuff also. Back in the old days (1970's) when I got into martial arts there was no K-1, MT or UFC. The PKA, WKA, and KICK were about all there was and the PKA had quite a large following with weekly ESPN broadcasts. Karate was my thing back then and full contact was about the most extreme form of it. I've been to dozens of these events live in California and Nevada and have seen a lot of the big name stars of the 80's. Never fought myself, but used to train and spar with several pro fighters that trained at or came to our school. Still love to pop an old tape or DVD in and watch these vintage fights today. Glad to hear from someone that has something good to say about this subject, rather that the usual negative crap it always gets.

Don Wilson's fight against Samart Prasamnit (not Payakaroon), was kind of a big thing back in the day

Interesting fact, Samart Prasamnit fought Wilson, Rob Kaman and Samart Payakaroon, all whithin the same month.

Great fight. I noticed too even though they are older all those style fighters from that era are in excellent shape for their age. Still throw a spinning heel hook like back in the day

Before K-1 the bigger events were situated in France (Paris) the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and some even in the US(..) . I am not sure if we can compare these events with the golden era of K-1. Different rules, other fighters etc.

For me that period was all about Rob Kaman which made me to love MT/KB.

i gotta agree, kaman had a very fun style to watch

Kaman is one of my favorites great early fight with Jean Yves Theriault. Brutally kod Hoost twice. Had a great mind for fighting hed still be one of the best if he was fighting these days in his prime

Yeah the late 70's to late 80's was a mish mash of Full Contact Karate, WKA and Muay Thai and you find Muay Thai fights on Full Contact bills and also the Muay Thai guys would have WKA style fights as well. I agree it was popular in Netherlands, France, Canada and the USA and England on a much smaller scale but any form of kickboxing in Japan had died down in popularity after 70's.

Dennis Alexio became the Tyson of kick boxing back in the day for his short reighn as the most feared guy in the late 80's ..early 90's. Alexio was invited to compete in UFC 1 but declined....they brought in Gerard Goudard instead.

Thought Super Kick Vick was early 90's? JWP doesn't fight like Super Kick, wow didn't know that thought he was pure Muay Thai.
Best is the old days was Benny the Jet,good boxing and tough.Had some great fights in Japan.

80's very early 90's..retired in 92 if I remember correctly. Yea JWP originally called himself Wonderkick, influenced by Superkick.. Jean Yves Theriault was like Benny the Jet look into him. He was a machine but went into beast mode after he got shot in the left arm, x rays showed his shoulder was messed up9not from gunshot) after hed already been fighting for a while. they fixed his shoulder then that left hook came out he was sleeping everyone. has 2 wins over Hoost aswell. one of the best Canadian fighters and was the first with the nickname ICEMAN in fighting not Liddell

I have seen some of Jean Yves Theriault's fights, didn't know he was shot?
That's a classic JWP nickname "Wonder Kick", like boy wonder and Super Kick was Batman.
Since JWP was a student on Vicks ,who would have won if they fought, student out shine the master or master takes out student. Did Vick fight Muay Thai?

Vick was master at W.T.F Taekwondo and than a world class kickboxer. I don't believe he ever delved into thai rules. I'm not sure. I would not be surprised if Vick found a way to win. My Taekwondo teacher is 37 been doing it for 25 years is 7th degree 250 plus fights all over. Too see what a jab-cross-hook (1-2-3) is with the hands. too see what that is with just feet is pretty damn scary., I'm a fan of both but I wouldn't be surprised if Vicks heel met his temple....that's just my opinion. Serkan Yilmaz is the best example of how a world class TKD guy can do in K-1 kickboxing rules. look him up. Short lived K1 career but fought the best and fared really well with his TKD....now him against Vick would be fight of the century if you ask me
