Lyoto Machida says fight against Michael Bisping ‘would mean a lot’ before either man retires

. . .

“I was very happy to fight at home, and Eryk’s a very tough opponent,” Machida said Saturday night at UFC Belem’s post-fight press conference. “I think that I was able to control the fight and land more punches. He kept the pressure on, but I think that it’s a matter of who can connect more shots.

“Of course, there’s always doubts (about the decision). You don’t know how the judges interpreted the fight, if they were looking at who kept the pressure or who landed more shots, so there’s always definitely some doubt.”

Machida, 39, called his shot in the immediate aftermath of his defeat of Anders, targeting former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping for his next fight. Afterward, Machida elaborated on his Bisping callout, explaining that the matchup is one that is a long time in the making and is something Machida hopes to secure before either he or the 38-year-old Brit retire.

“That’s a fight that should’ve happened a couple times and it didn’t,” Machida said. “I think we both matured together in this sport, so I think fight between Michael Bisping and myself would mean a lot.

“He might retire sometime soon, I could retire sometime soon, and people asked for that fight, so it’s a fight that interests me.”

Until recently, Bisping was expected to compete in his retirement fight on March 17 in London, England. Bisping clarified his intentions earlier this week though, announcing on Twitter that he won’t be fighting at UFC London after all.

On Saturday, Machida also demurred when asked about potentially fighting at UFC London, stating that he wasn’t sure about the date or the recovery time he’ll need after fighting twice in 15 weeks.

Machida also entertained the idea of facing another veteran who is zeroing in on retirement — former UFC champion Vitor Belfort — however Machida made it clear that he preferred Bisping.

“If I had a choice, I’d rather not fight someone from Brazil..."

And both retire

Good fight for both of them that hopefully doesn't result in any brain damage.

I see Bisping winning a technical point-match.

Machida is my favorite fighter but I think Bisping hasn’t declined as badly.

Wouldn’t be confident in picking Machida. Sad part is Bisping would get KO’d by Prime Machida easily.

Bisping said on his podcast he respects Machida and thinks he's a nice guy so I think there is a possibility here

He wants to go out on a good note with fans and not get into it with someone for his last fight and I think Machida meets the criteria here

I'm down with this

Machida is boring as hell to watch. Can't believe I would actually want bisping to win a fight for a change.

Watching him back pedal for 25 minutes Saturday almost put me to sleep

Great fight. I'd like to see both of them retire with a W. Fan of both.

Machida Vs Belfort for me

source ? or ban this post whore mods

Perhaps you didnt notice the 18 months he was suspended.

Machida [22-7] claims he did not know that Dehydroepiandrosterone [DHEA] was on the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s [Usada] prohibited list, and admitted to taking a supplement called 7-Keto which contains the “anabolic agent” DHEA.

According to USADA, Machida then failed the out of competition drug test that showed proof that he used the banned substance ahead of his last scheduled fight this past April when he was scheduled to face Dan Henderson in Florida.

“Machida’s sample was analyzed at a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory and reported to USADA for an elevated 7β-hydroxy-DHEA to DHEA ratio, which is consistent with his declared use of a prohibited substance,” USADA officials said.

I pick Lyoto. He's a better striker, and Bisping isn't likely to catch Machida, who is now very chinny. Machida probably gets the finish.

I want Bisping to win because I'm British and I want him to go out with a win.

I wanna see the fight.

Bisping is still fun to watch, the Machida fight was terrible

Lyoto just came off three brutal losses and Bisping is coming off two brutal losses.

Makes all the sense in the world, Lyoto doesn’t seem to have the same pop in his strikes and Bisping has never been a big puncher, good fight between two former big name champs in the last stretch of their careers.

Perfect for International Fight Week, both guys have a lot of time to heal until then and they’re both international fighters.
