Anyone seen them? Any good?

I'm not interested in competing at top-level MMA, just want a general knowledge of combat without spending too much on the gym/classes. Love Bas, know he's an awesome trainer - but is it even possible to become a decent fighter without an actual trainer?

I'd mainly be using his techniques as self-defense and for sparring with friends.

If we're talking about the Bas Rutten Big DVD of Combat (the 7 disc one), then yeah. They're a good 'general info' set of instructionals.

As far as self-defense instructionals go, Bas has a different one out called Lethal Street Fighting which is more geared towards this end. It's also got some hilarious quoteables in it, to boot.

I own the Big Books and DVDs of Combat and am extremely pleased with them. They contain an almost encyclopedic curriculum of MMA striking, takedowns and grappling, arranged for easy reference. I highly recommend them! Bas is awesome!

The Big DVD's are GREAT...and they're called "Big DVD's of Combat" for a reason...b/c they're HUGE...it's what...like 7 dvd's or something...each with like 1.5 hours of info on them...so if there's one problem, it's that there may be TOO MUCH information...so it takes a certain amount of experience to "sort through" it all and experimentation...

Fantastic purchase and a very good overall supplement to whatever type of training you do, whether it's MMA, no-gi grappling, or kickboxing/MT...

I knew he had the Lethal Street Fighting one, but I wanted a better base, that could also be used in a ring. Thanks for the responses!

I have them as well. They are very good. But they are only a reference tool (like all instructionals). What happens with any instructional is that you learn an escape, for example, and when you are next caught in that move you think, "Oh yeah. I know a good escape for this. Okay I need to secure this arm here, then....oh crap!!! Too late!!! *tap tap tap tap*

:D

But it gets you thinking along the right lines. Drilling it into muscle memory (which is how fast it has to be) takes time.

Well, I have a sparring partner who would be watching/training with me, so hopefully we would be able to drill together. I dont want to be Wanderlei Silva, I just want to be somewhere inbetween Silva and your average un-trained fighter.

I have Bas Rutten's Mixed Martial Arts Workout CD and DVD. I've yet to try it because I just got it, but I've heard very good things.

I have a good friend that has then and he loves them so they are more than likely really good

The Big DVDs are AWESOME. Probably the best instructional set I have seen. In it Bas shows a TON of moves, then the counters for what he shows, and for most things he shows a clip of where he used it in a fight. It is real stuff you can use.

Remember that friends don't let friends use heel hooks and neck cranks in sparring until you have a ton of experience. That stuff can screw you up good. Don't mess with it. There is plenty to learn at first without them.

I bought the Big DVDs before I started training. I'm still going back to them for details on things. Highly recommended, Bas has superb technique.

THAT SAID, you'll never get good enough to beat someone who trains at a real gym by just watching video and training with your buddy, no matter how good the video tape is.

I own them and use them 3-4 days a week. Probably at their best if you travel a lot or don't have the money or time to train at a gym.

They're pretty tough but worth every penny.

Do the Dvds of combat come with the mma/muaythai workout? or is there a package you can buy with both?

i don't think that buying these books will make you a great fighter unless you have good sparring partners or someone who is willing to help you train you and themselves as much as possible. I'm sure it is a good star though.

Bas' combat DVD's are great. Very detailed. You could easily learn a shit ton of stuff from it.

The Workout DVD's are great as well.

Just picked up the workout DVDs and they are fun but smoke the hell out of you.
