This vid was posted about one year ago where Bas Rutten explained the reason for broken legs due to checks:

...

Bas is absolutely correct.

Look at where Weidman's knee made contact with Silva's shin bone: On the side!

Bas knows... and also, that photo makes me sick.

I agree with you and the post and the analysis of the injury however I don't think it happens enough for it be called anything other than a freak injury.

Weidman win congratulations however let's leave the * where it belongs

the site you got hat video from also had a video of a kickboxer doing the same thin, the guy who "won" didn't accept the trophy because he knew it was a freak accident. respect to that guy
And that pic hurts to look at I get a leg cramp everytime I see it

So "dont hit with the flat part of the shin, hit with this part".

Which part is this part?

Couldn't agree more. Weidman said it in the post fight press conference, that they had gameplanned just for that.

If you watch enough muay thai matches, you'll see this injury is not as superfluous as many MMA fans would make it seem.

It doesn't happen enough to be a legitimate technique, but it happens enough that we shouldn't all be shocked by it. We just haven't seen in much in the UFC.

Whether or not people think it's a "fluke," the mechanics of the break, as explained by Bas Rutten, is undeniable: If the Shin connects to the side, it's going to break.

And that was what happened to Silva.

Freak accident no matter how you look at it man... he broke his leg in a defensive mode. Yes he tried to block the kick and it hurts the kicker more then the guy getting kicked... but the leg snapping like that is a freak accident

Isn't that the guy who says jabs are useless?

Yeah, I'm sure he knows what's he's talking about.

Accident or not, you cannot deny the law of physics...

If the shin connects at the front, it's not going to break.

If the shin connects on the side (the flat part), it's going to snap.

That is a good explanation. I often wonder why MMA fighters don't train in bone strengthening exercises like Bone Marrow Nei Kung, iron shirt, iron palm. I can't think of a group of people who would be better served with this type of conditioning than people who fight MMA for a living.

Not really physics but I get what your saying, also Weidman isn't the first person in mma to check a leg kick thrown like that. It happens all the time that's why I call it a freak accident
