I have a few friends that have said the P90X program is very good, but have never trained a day of martial arts in their life. Does anyone know if the intensity is comparable to any of the Bas Rutten CD's ? I train with Thai pads(which forces me to move around more), and add a high kick at the end of each combination. For you that have done the P90X program as well as the Bas Rutten workout, which one do you think is more intense, and overall better for MMA conditioning ?

OMG I have a couple of friends who are dorky dudes that swear by this. here's the thing:

mma conditioning? Bas Rutten's thing blows p90x away. It is way more fast paced and multidirectional movement that will help endurance with fast movements and pace.

However, p90x is good (not better necessarily) for creating muscle tone, aerobic fitness, and general health in sedentary individuals who are NOT in good shape or used to exercise. I have done it a couple times with those friends of mine and I say it is a decent exercise/activity to do on your off days.

The biggest problem with P90x however, is their content. They seem to market to the general population of people who aren't fit and are trying to lose weight. If these people come flocking to their program and swearing by doing this stuff, it can be dangerous if they cannot keep up with the material. The exercises do not fit the capabilities of the market they are getting at as they include some very advanced exercises most unfit people are not capable of without regular training/practice. FOr example, they have you doing stuff like walking lunges while holding dumbbells in both hands and doing presses with them. Most people can't even do correct lunges. They also have circuit programs involving one minute of pull-up repeated for a couple sets. I don't see how anyone but someone of athletic caliber completing some of this. Sooner or later, somebody is gonna get injured from from following this.

I know they also have some kind of diet program you also need to follow but I know nothing about it in particular. I prefer Bas's cds over this stuff especially for the price

Wtf. I downloaded P90X (illegally) watched some of it and deleted it asap. It's horrible.

Bas rutten WO is much much better. Just use programs like soundforge to make your own workouts. I made a killer track mixing together some workouts.

But sorry it would be illegal to share it.

Bas rutten, Ross Enamait, Rodney King and John Berardi stuff is the only thing I pay for because they deserves it. So buy it if you don't have it.

You sure that wasn't the big DVD's of Combat? I think that includes the workout but it's also 12 DVD's of instructional on all aspects of fighting.

P90x is actually a good program. I have it pirated and if you follow the workouts and the 3 month training cycle it actually works really well. I didnt follow the diet to a T, so i never got the results you see in the informercial, but i got into much better shape. Its not designed for MMA conditioning, but you could certainly modify it to better suit your training. For example there is a plyo day, yoga, stretching, and a 'kenpo x' workout. (i just substituted this for rounds on the heavy bag, its pretty corny. ) The strength training routines are actually pretty strenuous, and the training cycle actually keeps you from hitting a plateau. I wouldnt pay 180 for it though, lol.

I know a guy that is doing P90X and now he's totally jacked - rub baby oil on his muscles and take internet pictures jacked.

Seriously, I do know a guy that is doing P90X and has lost a little weight, but he's going from not working out at all and eating crappy to working out and eating well. So I wouldn't equate his results strictly to P90X.

Oblivion gave you all the advice you need.

yeah thanks for all of your input. I wasn't planning to try it, i just wanted to see how it would stand vs a standard conditioning CD like the Bas Rutten workout (since a lot of people tried it here on sherdog!)

I think the reason you hear a lot of people really talking up P90X and saying how great it works is because it's targeted to people that haven't really worked out much or don't know a lot about working out.

They try it along with a healthier diet and see results so they think it's the best thing ever. That's the case with the guy I know. I'm just thinking, "Really, you stop eating hamburgers all the time and started doing some type of physical activity and you think you've found the best system ever"

The Bas Rutten CD's w heavy bag are way better IMHO since you can do them in the gym or anywhere!

I typically do All Around Fighting 2 min (30 min) and then All Around Workout (30) min.

1 hour of straight hardcore workout ANYWHERE.

It will get you in great shape FAST.

P90x is marketed to people who don't take training seriously. If you take a couch potato and get them to do a semi decent routine and watch their diet, they'd get the same results.
The Bas workout is for people who are serious about their training. It will also work for those who haven't done anything, as long as they build up to it. If you're talking training for MMA, p90x is crap compared to Bas.

P90 X will make you prettier.

Bas will give you practice throwing liver shots.

Neither one is really all that great for MMA, IMO. (Bas was great back in the day, but that's because there was nothing else around, basically.)

The most effective training I have ever done FOR MMA/ BJJ, is Ross Training, like Oblivian said. This stuff made me feel like my lungs were actually bleeding, and I noticed the most direct carry over to my grappling.

Aren't his tapes just timed bagwork?

I'd say that's a pretty effective training method.

Terrible bump, and neither is a particularly targeted, specific conditioning program designed to address a specific fighters needs. Hence, neither is ideal. Bas is the more specific of the two, however.
