balancing weight lifting/martial arts training

Hi guys,

Ive been doing mixed martial arts now for a couple of months now, switching between night muay thai and bjj classes at an mma gym and its been going really great...but...I havent really had the time to hit the weights like I was when I wasnt doing martial arts. I ve been kind of tall and lanky my whole life but Ive lost about 4 pounds of muscle because of the amount of cardio involved...basically my question is what is the best way to continue training and working in weight lifting in my schedule to continue gaining muscle mass? in terms of diet, routine, balance... my schedule is kind of limited considering I am a full time student and work untill the evening on weekdays.

Well, my friend. Try to eat like the thread "GET HUGE diet" suggests. You need the energy, protein and calories of a diet like that since you are lanky and doing so much. You are going to have to start preparing your meals ahead of time and taking them to school. That's what I do, since I go to school and work just the same.
 
Eat like you mean it, and as for time, you have to find time. I used to go to school part time, work full time and try to balance my training time (amatuer fighter). Maybe you can get up earlier or workout late. I used to run at 11pm to get my runs in.
 
follow the diet in the get huge thread but adjust the amount of protein to your BW (reduce the portions of meat and protein scoops as necesary).

juggling weight training and skill training plus real life is someting I am still trying to figure out properly.
 
I have been trying for years to find a weight routine that I could balance with martial arts. It is really tough. Dont do any bodybuilding routines they tend to be very taxing. Powerlifting is ok, but its really hard to work out of your open guard the day after heavy squats or deads. I think olympic style lifting could be good, but it is really hard to learn the proper technique.

One thing is for sure you need to squat . You also need to work the bent over row or the deadlift. And finally you need to work the bench press or the overhead press, or weighted dips. If you focus on those lifts especially the squat, you will gain size and strenghth. Just dont get carried away, because it could hurt your fighting.

Sorry that probably didnt help much, but when I find a routine that leaves me enough gas to do both without one hurting the other Ill be sure to post it.
 
Do weights during the day then your training at night.
 
What Sambo said. I actually don't pigeon hole myself into days I have to work out. I have a general guideline but it can be changed. The biggest thing I am finding out is addition by subtraction. Less lifts=more focus on the more important lifts. Aim for heavy lifting twice a week, if possible do another day, if not don't sweat it and get one heavy lifting day in.
 
I go to the gym in the morning before work. I do my training at night.
