Sorry O/T But I was wondering would it be okay if i did muay thai even tho i got bad teeth? my teeth arent straight and i dont have the money for braces at the moment, but was wondering would my teeth be knock out if i wore those teeth protectioN? Thanks

I would imagine if you had like troll under a bridge teeth, then there could be problems, but as far as I know, if you form your mouthguard properly, it should work fine. You could require one of those much more expensive ones that have to be molded by a dentist though...

I do have an option for you....

The Univers model is suitable for very crowded or misaligned teeth.

Bro get your teeth fixed first, i feel bad for you. Just get them fixed and get a good mouthguard and you should be set

Damnit, i recently joined this muay thai place and all, was excited....Knowing i be able to defend myself if i ever got into a street fight, do i got any other choice? because braces are really expensive. Im 16 btw...

would i be able to use mouthpiece with braces if any chance i get theM?

They do make mouthguards for people who have braces. If you can't afford to get your teeth fixed which is quite understandable you still need a mouthguard. I don't know to what degree your teeth are messed up to and if it's getting progessively worse. I would go with a cheaper boil and bite and hope it fits you well. But if it's realyl bad maybe a custom guard is a viable option as it's tailor made to you. I'm sure Tom could make a better recommendation though.

i truly appreciated what you help me so far...Getting my spirit up.. But who's tom? And Where a good place to purchase mouthguard?

I believe they are talking about Tom Cold, a resident mouthguard expert on this forum.

as for braces, get them, you're better off taking care of it now then say getting into a fight and having them knocked out and needing complete dental reconstruction later.

would be taking muay thai/bjj class be waste of time then? because i just joined a days ago! I hope i didnt waste my money for nothing!

it will be if your teeth get knocked out and then you have more problems...

tbh I dont think BJJ will knock your teeth out but you probably should be careful with muay thai

I suppose the best question to ask is, "Are you going to get braces?" You say you are 16 so I'm assuming that your parents are the ones that will be making that decision for you in the near future. If not then I know they are fairly expensive . The best avenue for you to take in my opinion if money is an issue is a boil and bite first. If your going to train you need at least some form of protection. Ask around on the forum which boil and bite type the fighters recommend. Very few people have straight teeth so your not alone.

If you do get braces in the future you can get a custom fitted guard as well. It will be a little more bulky than a standard one but it will protect both your teeth and lips from oral trauma. Since the placement of your teeth will be changing you will most likely need more than one.

i think i have enough $ to purchase custom mouthguard rather then a cheap boil n bite, can i purchase a custom mouthpiece from a dentist?

I bought a mouth guard from my dentist and it ended up costing over $400. THe fit is great and I love it. I recently had Gladiator make me a heavy duty one and it's really nice as well but the best part is that it was way less expensive. I would go with either John at Gladiator or Tom at ProTech. A custom mouth guard is well worth the money.

How much money is the average custom mouthguard from gladiator or protech?

Protech, gladiator, biteme and opro seem to be the popular custom mouthguard companies.

If you decide to get braces I know opro uses a special impression kit for you, and gladiator mentions it on their site so they must make them on a regular basis for people with braces. With braces you will have to get a new mouthguard when they come off, and maybe at least one in between if your teeth have to move a lot. Could get expensive to replace a custom guard a few times.

Braces are expensive, and a pain in the ass while you have them. But in the long run I think it's worth it. I have no idea what your situation is, but dental insurance usually only covers braces for kids. So, if your parents have dental coverage, now would be the time to do it, because if you wait until you're an adult the whole cost will come out of your pocket.
