BAD BOYS Spinoff TV Series Starring Gabrielle Union in the Works

The Bad Boys hit movie franchise is getting a spinoff TV series centered on the character played in the second film by Gabrielle Union.

Deadline hears the untitled project, which is currently being pitched to TV networks, already has garnered strong interest from multiple places and is expected to land a major commitment. It hails from the Bad Boys movies’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Belgrad via his 2.0 Entertainment and Primary Wave Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV Studios, whose movie sibling is behind the feature franchise, is the studio.

The untitled Bad Boys spinoff is being written by The Blacklist writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier. Union’s Special Agent Sydney “Syd” Burnett, introduced in the sequel Bad Boys II, is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) who was romantically involved with Marcus’ partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith). She is an undercover operative with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Union just became available as BET announced that her popular series Being Mary Jane will end with next year a two-hour series finale movie.

Deadline hears the idea for a Bad Boys offshoot centered around Union’s character came from Primary Wave Entertainment, which manages the actress, in the company’s first broadcast development season since it brought in former NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin as President. He executive produces the project alongside Union’s manager Jeff Morrone.

Because it is based on existing Bruckheimer IP, the project does not fall under Jerry Bruckheimer TV’s overall deal at CBS TV Studios. Via that pact, Bruckheimer TV has set up three drama projects at CBS: Main Justice, a legal drama inspired by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder; Unthinkable, an FBI crime drama penned by MacGyver executive producer David Slack; and Whistleblower from NCIS: New Orleans executive producer/co-showrunner Chris Silber.

Jessica Alba to Star Alongside Gabrielle Union in NBC's BAD BOYS Spinoff

NBC's untitled Bad Boys spinoff just added some big star power. In one of the biggest castings of the season, Jessica Alba has signed on as the co-lead in the network's drama pilot starring Gabrielle Union.

The drama revolves around free-spirited former DEA agent Syd Burnett (Union, reprising her role from Bad Boys II), who has a fresh start in her new job as an LAPD detective. She is partnered with Nancy McKenna (Alba), a working mom who can't help but look at Syd's freedom with some grass-is-greener envy. These two have totally different lifestyles and approaches, but they both are at the top of their fields in the action-packed, character-driven procedural.

Alba's Nancy joined the Army out of high school and spent most of the 2000s in Iraq and Afghanistan. Women weren't allowed in combat so she joined the military police to get closer to the action and is now a detective raising two preteen step-kids with her husband. Alba, who received multiple offers this pilot season, will also be credited as an exec producer on the potential series.

The untitled drama was written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (The Blacklist), who exec produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Jeff Gaspin, Jeff Monroe, Doug Belgrad and Union. Anton Cropper will direct the pilot and also receive EP credit. The drama hails from Sony Pictures Television Studios, Jerry Bruckheimer Television, Primary Wave and 2.0 Entertainment. (Sony's Columbia produced the original features alongside Bruckheimer and Belgrand.)

The casting, which helps push the procedural to the top of NBC's drama pilots, marks Alba's first TV series regular role since her Golden Globe-winning role in Fox's Dark Angel. Her feature credits include Fantastic Four and Sin City.

So, bad boys, but with chicks, yeah this is gonna work

I'll give it a shot. Zero expectations, though.

No idea why I thought this was going to be about the actual great movie by that name.

Guess Dwyane Wade's paychecks aren't cutting it.

Shit. I may give it a shot. We really couldn't get Martin to do this shit though?

I heard they’re remaking Band of Brothers with an all female cast.

It’s about time says this impartial observer.

Jessica Alba better be naked 92% of the time or I'm not watching

Never heard of it- But Reni Santoni, Poppy from Seinfeld- I’m in.

Please stop. I mean yes it's ok that Union is a part of it, but cmon. At least change the name. Don't make me refer to it as the "Female version of Bad Boys". That'd be as bad as having to say the "Female Ghostbusters" because they weren't smart enough to use a different name.

Also, Bad Boys just came on my tv, no joke. Bellator ended and Bad Boys was on next.

I'm glad they decided to stop whitewashing, I heard they will also remake the movie & finally tell the true story or what really happened, about how a group of transgendered POCs secured the beaches at Normandy & saved the free world. Working title: Saving Private Ryan Is A Waste Of Time Because He's Part Of The Cisgender White Male Patriarchy

This is like Rizzoli and Isles with minority women in LA.

But I will watch for Jessica
